Frye, Gurley in Golden

Spread all-star games

Friona Squaw senior Miranda Frye and senior Chieftain Alex Gurley will participate in the annual Golden Spread basketball all-star games this weekend at the First United Bank Center on the WT campus in Canyon.

The annual tourney consists of four teams: East, West, North, South, for both boys and girls. Only seniors are selected to play and the event is a talent showcase for college coaches. Both Frye and Gurley were 2-2A all-district selections and both will be playing on the respective West teams.

Frye’s team will play the East team at 6 p.m. today, Thursday April 10. If they lose they play again at 1 p.m. Saturday. If they win they play at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Gurley’s team follows a similar schedule. They play the East squad at 8 p.m. Thursday April 10. If they lose they play at 3 p.m. Saturday. If they win they play at 8 p.m. Saturday.

One possible glitch for the Gurleys. Alex will play Thursday night, travel to Abilene over Friday and Saturday for the UIL Academic regional competition, then try and make it back to Canyon for Saturday’s contest. If his team wins Thursday and plays at 8 p.m. Saturday he should be able to make it back in time. If they lose Thursday and play at 3 p.m. Saturday it is not likely he can make it by game time.

The challenge is simple: win the Thursday game. Go Big Red! Congratulations to Alex and Miranda for being all-stars and for their contributions to Friona athletics and the community.
