FRIONA WEATHER

A big Thank You is in order for the Friona Cemetery Association and the City of Friona for having the Friona Cemetery in excellent condition for the Memorial Day holiday. Drought and high winds have made it really tough to maintain the property this year and they have done an outstanding job.

Snack Pak News

Shout out to J.D. Heiskell for donating $1,900 to SP4K. There was a Jiff peanut butter recall and it is no longer used in the bags. If you still have some from the last month, it is suggested that you throw it out.

Jameson punches out after 50 years

Coy Jameson retired last week after putting in a half-century of work with Houlette Petroleum. Coy started working for Dale Houlette in 1972 on the last day of his sophomore year at Friona High School. Last Wednesday was his final day on the job and it was spent visiting with customers at a come-and-go reception at the office. There was also a reception hosted by Danny & Pam Kendrick that evening at the Hereford Country Club. Kendrick Oil Company recently purchased Houlette Petroleum and "business as usual" will be the operating plan.

Summertime — The month of June has 30 days though on the pre-Caesar Roman calendar, the month only had 29 days, When the winter days were given two months and more days were added to the calendar, June was given an additional day. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar modified the Roman Calendar by dividing the year into twelve months. By adding two months, the Julian calendar moved June from the 4th month to its current position. June also derives its name from the goddess Juno, Jupiter's wife. The longest day of the year is in June. The Summer Solstice ushers in astrological summer on June 20th or 21st. June's full moon is called the strawberry moon.

Definitely not a big gulp — National Moonshine Day recognizes a beverage with a notorious record of blurring the lines of history and the law as well as one's vision and brain. At least that is the buzz on the street. Mostly made from a corn mash, it is a distilled whiskey that is typically produced illegally and without a permit. Consumers of the intoxicating liquid also refer to it as white lightning, mountain dew, homebrew, hillbilly pop, and rotgut.
