Lessons taught, lessons learned

Friona First Responders Emergency Training Event • May 21, 2022

It was designed to be a learning experience and it did not disappoint. The inaugural Friona First Responders Training Event was held on Saturday, May 21st. First responders from cities, towns, and rural communities converged on Friona to improve their ability to diagnose and solve problems that arise in emergency situations.

Individuals, groups, organizations, and businesses would need to work together to make the event a success in the same way the event would strive to teach the attendees how to work together to navigate various emergency scenarios.

The training school began with classroom work, operating instructions, and a complimentary meal. Cargill of Friona provided the cooking crew which delivered up awesome steaks while the Friona Noon Lions Club provided their "world famous" french fries. Lowe's Marketplace provided bottled water and A-Tex Dairy supplied the ice cream. Hi-Pro furnished all attendees with leather gloves and safety glasses.

Local volunteers served as "patients" and looked the part courtesy of UMC/Lubbock make-up artists. The City of Friona provided the Community Center for the meal and King Country/K3 Towing provided the venue just west of town. Vehicles used for the "crash scene" were donated by Daniel De La O, Amy Laing, and Gary Stowers.

Those participating in the training event included Shallowater Fire and EMS, Amarillo Fire, UMC Lubbock EMS and Hospital, Rhea-Bootleg Fire, Friona Fire and EMS, Parmer County Sheriff's Office, and Farwell EMS and Fire. The EMS crews did receive CE credits.

Event organizer Nik Baucom, City of Friona EMS Director, said that planning is already underway for next year's event which will be sometime in April 2023. Baucom stated, "I would like to thank everyone involved for making the first-ever training event a success. We look forward to making next year's event bigger and better!" More photos here.
