School Board orders General Election

A Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees of Friona ISD was held on Monday, January 16, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Meeting Room of the FISD Administration Building located at 909 E. 11th Street in Friona, Texas.

January is recognized nationally as school board appreciation month. Superintendent Jimmy Burns commended the Board of Trustees for their hard work and dedication to the students. He presented each board member with a token of appreciation from the school district.

During the open forum portion of the meeting. Trisha Winebrinner, representing a group of individuals, expressed concerns regarding the FISD sports programs. Also, Esmeralda Mills presented an overview of the new Friona Junior High Parent Involvement Committee (P.I.C.) that has been formed to help promote stronger relationships among students, parents, and teachers.

The Board approved a motion to order a General Election for the election of two (2) at-large School Board Trustees to be held on May 6, 2023. The terms of Jamie Lewellen and Wade Schueler expire this year. The deadline to file for an application to become a candidate is Friday, February 17th. Applications are available at the Friona ISD Administration Building. Approval was also given to enter into a Joint Election Agreement with the City of Friona.

The consent agenda was approved. This agenda includes the Minutes of previous meetings, fund reports, maintenance reports, account reports, and the payment of monthly bills. The Board then went into Closed Session.

Save the Date - St. Ann's Catholic Church of Bovina is having their annual German Sausage Dinner on Sunday, January 29, 2023 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. (Texas time) in the St. Ann's Parish Hall at 401 3rd Street in Bovina, Texas. A delicious buffet of Sausage and Sauerkraut with all the trimmings will be served. Donations will be $15 for adults and $6 for children under six years of age. Take-out plates will be available at no additional charge.

Cup of Joe - Irish Coffee Day is Wednesday, January 25th. On a cold, wet day in 1942 weary travelers to the small Shannon Airport in southwest Ireland found their way to a restaurant and chef Joe Sheridan. To warm his guests, he served them hot coffee, spiked with whiskey and topped with whipped cream. The passengers asked if the beverage was Brazilian coffee. Sheridan responded that it was Irish coffee. The rest is history.

Stock Show Edition - The Friona Star will publish a Parmer County Jr. Livestock Show special edition on February 2nd which will include complete show results and photos. As of press time on Wednesday, the Steer Show was completed. Kobi Kirby of Lazbuddie won Grand Champion and Blaykin Branscum of Lazbuddie won Reserve Champion.

Aquifer Field Day - An Aquifer Field Day is set for Wednesday, February 8th in Amarillo and will examine how playas, the under-appreciated natural ephemeral wetlands abundantly dotting the region in a density as great as one per square mile, can play a critical role in the water future of the area, particularly for small towns and municipalities. Laurie McAfee, LBSW from the Area Agency on Aging will be presenting a free educational program at Legacy Point, 1500 N. Main, Friona Texas on Thursday, January 26th at 10:30 AM. Donuts and coffee will be provided. The presentation will include information about new changes for Medicare 2023, new preventative services and how to avoid getting scammed. Every year seniors fall prey to scams which can cost them thousands of dollars. This presentation will help to bring awareness and show how to prevent scams.

Parent Involvement Committee has been formed

The Friona Junior High Parent Involvement Committee (P.I.C.) was organized in December 2022. Its mission is to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children by raising funds and fostering relationships among the students, parents, and teachers.

The P.I.C. will conduct a public meeting on Thursday, February 9th at the Friona Junior High Cafeteria. Everyone is invited to attend.

Current officers include: Esmeralda Mills (Co-Pres.), Isidro Jimenez (Co-Pres.) Erika Carrillo (Sec.), Jamie Lewellen (Treas.), and Raquel Salazar (Exec. Board Member). Election of new officers will be conducted at the next regular meeting on Thursday, April 20th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the TW&M LLC offices on Main.
