Lopez selected to All-State team

Friona High School senior Anthony Lopez was selected as a member of the Padilla Poll Coaches 2022 All-State Team for Class 3A, Division II. Anthony earned a spot on the 2nd Team Defense as a Linebacker. He previously earned 1st Team All-District honors and was the second leading tackler for the Chieftains last season. Congratulations Anthony!!!

Cardboard recycling comes to Friona

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held last Friday at the new City of Friona cardboard recycling center. Mayor Greg Lewellen and City Manager Lee Davila were joined by a host of other officials which included (l-r): Emma Rector, Marca Herring, Daphne Morcom, Salvador Garcia, Mayor Lewellen, Andy Alexander, Manager Lee Davila, Alan Monroe, Cindy Moreno, Yvette Williams, Esmeralda Mills, Sherri Alger, Mari Martinez, and Sandra Busch.

Green cardboard recycling bins are located at 8th Street and Jackson. Please follow directions posted on each of the bins.

Creative Chaos celebrated its 10th Anniversary last Saturday with free tacos, fun prizes, and lots of discounts. Owner Adrianna Stowers would like to thank everyone that came by the store and helped celebrate the milestone. Prairie/Legacy News - Joe Mann is the February Resident of the Month at Prairie Acres. The Employee of the Month for February is Kaye Funk. Congratulations to both.

A donated quilt is currently on display at Legacy Pointe Senior Apartments. Raffle tickets ($5 each) will be sold until May 14th for a chance to win it. Proceeds will be used to purchase a minivan to help with the transportation needs of the residents. Legacy Pointe will also host a Valentine's Cookie Decorating Day on Thursday, February 9th from 4-6 p.m.

Milk House Market To Close - Store owner Crystal Moroney posted on the store's facebook page that she has decided to close the Milk House Market storefront in Friona in order to spend more time with her family. She said that she has cherished the past 9 years building the business and will really miss the MHM team. Read more on the facebook page.

SNAP To End - Gov. Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is providing more than $345.9 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for the month of February as the final extension of benefits. Congress recently passed legislation to establish February 2023 as the last month eligible households can receive emergency SNAP benefits. The allotments are expected to help about 1.6 million Texas households. SNAP households can find out how much their regular monthly benefit amount will be without the emergency allotment by logging into their account on YourTexasBenefits.com or the mobile app.

Filing period open for May 6 general election

The candidate filing period is open for positions on the Friona Independent School District Board of Trustees, Friona City Council, and Parmer County Hospital District Board of Directors. The filing period ends on Friday, February 17th at 5:00 p.m. The general election will be held on Saturday, May 6th from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

The FISD Board of Trustees has two positions up for election this year. The terms of Jamie Lewellen and Wade Schueler are expiring. School board members serve three year terms. Anyone who is interested in filing for the election can contact Claudia Castillo at the FISD administration office at 909 E, 11th, Friona Texas or call 250-2747.

There are three positions up for election on the city council. The terms of council members Bruce Fleming, Esmeralda Mills, and Alan Monroe are expiring. Council members serve two year terms. To file as a candidate, go by City Hall at 623 Main, Friona, Texas or call 250-2761 for information about the election.

The Parmer County Hospital District Board will have two positions open for election. The terms of Ricky Barnett and Danny Kendrick are expiring. Board members serve two year terms. Husted signs with WTAMU

On Wednesday, February 1st, Andrew Husted signed a letter of intent to play football for the West Texas A&M Buffaloes. A signing ceremony was held for the Farwell High School senior and a fellow classmate who signed to play football for the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys. Andrew was recruited to play on the offensive line and is excited to join new head football coach Josh Lynn at WTAMU this fall. Andrew was joined by his mom, Pam, and brothers, Grayson and William, at the event which was held in the Farwell gym. Andrew attended Friona Schools through his sophomore year before transferring to Farwell.
