Town Talk II

by Ron Carr

They call it a dusting. That’s all we had for snow Monday morning. Didn’t add up to any moisture but caused some slick roads around the county. Several accidents Monday morning of the “sliding into the ditch” variety. A couple of accidents Monday afternoon west of town near Cargill had nothing to do with the snow, which was gone by then. No moisture in the forecast for the next several days.

We send thanks to Mitch Terry and his automotive class from last year for building the many lighted stars that are shining on Main St. If you haven’t been down Main St. after dark take a ride and enjoy. I stopped by the Friona blood drive last Thursday. Jim Murphree was hooked up giving blood and had time to tell this story: Three vampires went into a bar. The waitress came over and said ‘what’ll you have’. The first vampire said he would have a glass of blood. The second said he would have a glass of blood. The third vampire said he would have a glass of plasma. The waitress turned and yelled to the bartender, “two bloods and a blood lite”. Thanks for the material Jim and thanks to all who donated the 60 units of blood at the blood drive.

Big noisy wreck Monday about 5 p.m. west of Cargill in the westbound lanes. Friona firemen and EMS were dispatched. A Buick passenger car tried to pass between an SUV and semi-, clipped the SUV on the left rear, bounded into the right rear of the semi- then cartwheeled and landed on its top on the right shoulder of Hwy 60. The New Mexico couple were extracted by the Friona firemen and transported to PMC by Friona EMS. The Sheriff’s department was on the scene and DPS Trooper Izzy Carrasco investigated the wreck.

Friona firemen were paged to a gas leak call about 12:30 noon Sunday. Monday they were called to the wreck on Hwy 60 west of Friona. I keep a scanner in the office and our building is about two blocks from the fire station. I’m always amazed how quick the firemen respond. From the time of the page until the first truck rolls is often 2-3 minutes or less. We are thankful for a great group of volunteers.

The conference between referees and school officials at halftime during the Squaws basketball game with Abernathy had to do with a district rule that only two officials are hired for basketball games. There were three officials at the game. One of the refs told me they didn’t know about the rule until halftime. Coaches agreed to continue with three refs but future games will only have two. Superintendent Austin said our district voted to have two officials to save money.
