Long time Chieftain fans will recognize these guys from the 1996 Chieftain team that advanced to the State 3A football semi-finals in Texas Stadium, losing to eventual state champion Tatum. From left are center Landon Wiseman, quarterback Kyle Grimsley, and running back Andy Kendrick. They were participating in the Pudge Kendrick Memorial Golf Tournament last weekend at Friona Golf Club. Landon farms in Friona, Andy has moved back to Friona to join the family business, and Kyle recently purchased the State Farm Agency in Dalhart.

Hotter than a firecracker. 100, 100, 100. That seems to be our temperature highs this week. Maybe a few cooler temps and slight chance of showers this weekend. The burn ban in the county remains lifted until July 8, the date of the next county commissioners meeting.(more...)

Cargill Friona - 45 years later

In preparation for this article, I decided to look back 45 years and read what was written about the first day of operations at our facility. It is amazing how the industry has changed and grown over the last 45 years. Excitement was building about a state-of-the-art facility, the largest of its kind in the world, inaugurating beef production in a plant that Frionans could be proud to call their own. Even though much has changed, some things have changed very little. In the original plans we employed 250 people and processed nearly 1,500 head of cattle daily. Today, our team is comprised of nearly 2,000 people and we process 1,500 cattle by lunch break on our first shift. I wonder what employees from the plant’s past would think if they could see us now? Fundraiser for Depot windows

During their recent meeting the Community Heritage Society decided to hold a fundraising campaign to raise money to replace the rotting windows in the Depot in the Park. (more...)
