Cheeseburger Festival planning underway

The 9th Annual Texas Cheeseburger Festival promises to be a great time at the Friona City Park, 700 Main Street, on July 19. The event is sponsored by Friona Chamber of Commerce and Ag and will feature a Cheeseburger Cook-off, Car Show and assorted vendors.

The Cheeseburger Cook-off has something new this year. The Chamber will be selling tickets instead of wristbands. For $7, hungry festivalgoers will receive four tickets. These tickets can be used to buy a whole burger, two half burgers or four quarter burgers.

Cost to compete in the Cook-Off is $100 per team. The entry fee includes meat, cheese, lettuce, onion, tomatoes, buns and ice.

The teams will be competing for $1,000 and $300 in prize money. The public will be able to vote for the People’s Choice Cheeseburger Award by placing money in designated cans at each cook-off site. One dollar equals one vote. Contributions will go to the Parmer County Cancer Coalition. The Cutest Campsite will receive a prize as well.

The event will begin at 7 a.m. with set up followed by orientation, rules and a food safety presentation at 8 a.m.

Cheeseburgers will go to the judges at 11 a.m. and will be available to the public at 11:30 a.m.

Tickets will be sold at the Chamber Office, 621 Main, from July 8-18 and at the Gazebo in the Park on July 19.

Food and assorted vendors will also be in the park for the event. For a 10 x 10 ft. booth, the cost is $30 and a 10 x 20 ft. booth is $60. If electricity is required, it will be an additional $10 and cannot be guaranteed.

Vendor forms, cook-off entry forms and car show entry forms are available at the Chamber website: www.frionachamber.com, click on Cheeseburger Festival.

Deadline for cook-off entries and vendor forms is 3 p.m. on Friday, July 11.

“Get your vendor forms and fees in early for the best locations in the park,” encouraged Friona Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Chris Alexander.

Registration for the Car Show will be at 11 a.m. on July 19 on 7th Street next to the park and is open to cars, pickups and motorcycles. Entry fee is $20. Each entrant will receive one free cheeseburger for each car show registration. Trophies will be awarded for People’s Choice 1st and 2nd place, Best of Parmer County, Best Stock Motorcycle and Best Custom Motorcycle.

“Come join the fun!” stated Alexander.
