Reading Rocks. The Friona Library’s pre-school story time begins September 4 from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. for kids that are 3-years-old by September 1. Registration began this week. Call the library at 250-3200 for registration info. It is a great program to get your little ones interested in reading.

Eugene and Patsy Bandy will celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary Saturday August 30. That is a long time but I bet it went by pretty fast. Congratulations you two.

Happy anniversary to Socorro and Victor Gonzalez celebrating their 44th this week.

Local insurance guy Andy Montana and Squaw volleyball/basketball coach Darrell Ray have signed on with KNNK Radio 100.5 FM as broadcasters for the Chieftain football games. The duo should bring some interesting insight to the games. You can tune in on the radio, or WT Services channel 6, or online at KNNK.com. Season starts this week at Olton. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

There will be a 7th grade, 8th grade, JV volleyball tournament in Friona September 4 and September 6. Not September 5 due to football. Coach Darrell Ray said 11 schools have signed on. The action should be non-stop in the new activity center gym where three matches can be held at the same time.

Thursday August 21 about 11:00 p.m. the fire department volunteers were called out to a fence on fire in the 800 block of Prospect. The cause of the fire was unknown. They said they did not find signs of an accelerant or other cause.

The Clovis News Journal reports that the Roden-Smith Gift store will close. The pharmacy will remain open. There will be a retirement closeout sale the next few weeks. Around October 1 the 17,000 square foot space will be renovated and taken over by the Paradise Market grocery store with an opening date around October 29.

The Chieftain/Squaw Booster Club is taking preorders for the 2014 Spirit t-shirts. They are only available for preorder. Short sleeve is $12 and long sleeve is $17. No t-shirts will be sold at the games this year. Order forms are available at the high school office or call Sandra Berend. Or look on Facebook at Chieftain/Squaw Booster Club. The Boosters also have an inventory of t-shirts, caps, and other items from previous years that will be sold at the concession stand during home games.

August 26 was the 94th anniversary of the constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote. Difficult to imagine in this 21st century world.

State Senator Kel Seliger will hold a town hall meeting in Friona on Monday September 15 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the Depot in the city park. Seliger is the chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee and serves on the Senate Finance, Education, Open Government, and Natural Resources committees. Everyone is invited to attend.

Interesting name. The oldest pioneer man attending the senior lunch at the 2014 Curry County Fair was Perry Winkle. He is 92.

Tuesday September 2 at 6:30 p.m. is the public hearing about the city’s proposed tax rate. It will be held in the city council chambers, 619 Main St. The council will consider the tax rate for approval at its Monday September 8 city council meeting.

Labor Day weekend is ahead. The Star office will be closed Monday. Our calendar for September is busy. Preparation for the Maize Days celebration will be in full swing as September arrives. Applications for Miss Friona and Little Miss are available at the Chamber of Commerce. I know Chris and Betty would appreciate the girls registering early. Maize Days parade and city park celebration is Saturday October 4.
