Obituary

Jewel Oleta Green

On September 30, 2015 Jewel Oleta Green, 96, left the arms of her loving family and is resting in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She had been a resident of Bivens Memorial Nursing Home of Amarillo since 2008, previously living in Friona, Pampa and Muleshoe, Patterson, California and Satanta, Kansas. Memorial services were held Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Home Pioneer Chapel with Reverend Larry Ellis officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of Griggs Schooler Gordon Funeral Directors.

Jewel was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Mary. E. Wells; her husband, George E. Green; a son, Donald C. Green; and seven siblings.

Jewel is survived by her daughters, Gwen Greeson and Rita Goettsche and husband Mark; five grandsons, Donald Glen Green, Jackie Caswell, Todd Greeson, Marc Greeson and Marte Christian; a granddaughter, Holle Martin; seventeen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

Modesta Torres

Modesta Torres, 68, of Friona, TX, died on Thursday, October 1, 2015 in Amarillo, TX. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, October 5, 2015 at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Friona, TX, with Reverend Anthony Swamy, pastor, and Reverend David Contreras, former pastor of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church. Burial followed in Friona Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Blackwell-Mullins Funeral Home of Friona, TX.

Modesta was born on February 24, 1947 in La Paz, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Pablo Rayos and Luz Maria Flores Rayos. She married Gilberto Torres in 1952 in Mexico. She was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, and was a homemaker. Her hobbies included cooking for her family, playing bingo in Amarillo, Mexican music, and dancing.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister; one brother; one son-in-law; and one son.

Modesta is survived by her husband, Gilberto Torres, Sr. of Friona, TX; four sons, Gilberto Torres, Jr. (Miroslava) of Friona, TX, Jesus Torres (Veronica) of Friona, TX, Mario Torres (Laura) of Hereford, TX, and Alonso Torres (Rosa Elva) of Yoacum, TX; two daughters, Irma Reyes (Francisco Javier) of Hereford, TX, and Manuela Granillo of Kermit, TX; four brothers, Mario Rayos of Odessa, TX, Pablo Rayos of Colorado, Jose Rayos of CO, Lalo Rayos of Sonora, Chihuahua, Mexico; four sisters, Romelia Rayos of Aldama, Chihuahua, Mexico, Rosario Rayos of Sorrento, LA, Maria Rayos of Utah, Noemi Rayos of Pueblo, CO; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Josephina Gonzalez

Josephina Gonzalez, 56, of Friona, Texas, died on Monday, October 5, 2015 in Hereford, TX. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at Church of the Living God with Jose Octavio Rico, minister. Burial followed in Friona Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Blackwell-Mullins Funeral Home.

Josephina was born on November 2, 1958 in Lubbock, Texas to Isaias Duarte and Francisca Coronado Duarte. She married Ramon Gonzalez in 1985 in Lubbock, Texas. Josephina was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Living God. Her hobbies included sewing, watching novelas, listening to Christian music, and cooking for her family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Isaias Duarte, and a son, Jason Garcia.

Josephina is survived by her husband, Ramon Gonzalez of Friona, TX; five sons, Flavio Gonzalez (Agueda) of Glen Rose, TX, Alfredo Garcia of Lubbock, TX, Rodrigo Gonzalez (Blanca) of Mexico, Gerardo Gonzalez (Sonia) of Friona, TX, and Bobby “Bo” Gonzalez of Friona, TX; two daughters, Azuzuena Gonzalez (Chano) of Mexico, and Anna Isabel Gonzalez of Mexico; her mother, Francisca Duarte of Lubbock, TX; four brothers, Danny Duarte of Lubbock, TX, David Duarte of Albuquerque, NM, Isaias Duarte of Lubbock, TX, and Miguel Duarte of Lubbock, TX; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Loree Rolen

Dorothy Loree Rolen, was ushered into the presence of her Lord on Thursday October 1. She was born on August 20, 1937 in Ft. Worth, TX. Dorothy graduated from Friona High School and completed Cosmetology school. She married the love of her life, Ardith Rolen on February 19, 1964 in Lubbock, TX.

Dorothy loved life and fellowship. She cherished her time in God’s presence and shared the Father’s love with everyone around her. Dorothy enjoyed discussions on current topics and reminiscing through life’s memories. She took great delight in the time she had with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy served God and lived a life that glorified God’s message of faith, hope, and love.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Ardith Rolen; her parents Elwood and Mamie Vaughn; and her brother Haywood Vaughn.

She is survived by a brother Odell Vaughn of Waxahachie, TX.; three daughters, Dorothy Kennedy and husband Kenny of Lubbock, TX, Stacy Alston and husband Donnie of Camp Wood, TX, and Vickie Gish and husband Dave of Reno, NV; nine grandchildren, Kayla Tuck, Garrett Kennedy, Trevor Tweedy, Brady Kennedy, Reagan Kennedy, Michael Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy, Danyel Gish, and David Gish; and seven great-grandchildren, Eli Tuck, Damien Tuck, Presley Kennedy, Troy Tweedy, Bella Gish, Gracie Kennedy, Rayleigh Kennedy, and Jolee Kennedy.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 10, 2015, 2:30 p.m. at the Barksdale Baptist Church in Barksdale, TX, under the direction of Nelson Funeral Home of Camp Wood, TX.

Brenda Phipps

Funeral services for Brenda Phipps, 70, of Hereford, TX, were held Thursday, October 8, 2015 at Hereford Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Ted Taylor, officiating. Interment followed in Rest Lawn Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mrs. Phipps passed away Sunday, October 4, 2015 in Deaf Smith County.

Brenda Elaine Deaton was born February 22, 1945 to Leslie Lois and Laura May Crow Deaton in Dimmitt, Texas. She went all through school in Friona and graduated from Friona High School in 1963. She married Phil Phipps in Friona on February 9, 1964. They moved to Hereford in 2003 from Long Prairie, MN. Brenda taught school and was the Women’s Ministry Director at Hereford Church of the Nazarene. Brenda had love and compassion for people no matter who they were or their station in life, she lived life with open arms and an open heart. She was a loving wife, mother, and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved her Lord with all of her heart, and served Him all her life.

She is survived by her husband Phil of Hereford; three daughters, Leslee Kronberg and husband Alan of Omaha, NE, Tonya Kay Grant and husband William of Edenton, NC, and Diane Lynn Schuett and husband Clint of Randall, MN; two sons, Quint Phipps and wife Regina of Turkey, TX, and Dale Phipps and wife Cherie of Spokane, WA; 24 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois Strickland of Clovis, and Glenda Rocha and husband Mike of Grand Rapids, MN.

Mrs. Phipps is preceded in death by her parents.
