We got news this week that Cecil Maddox, former Friona resident, is scheduled to have heart surgery this week. Cecil is now living in Boulder, Colorado. No specific date was given.

The Friona Public Library has new hours. Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop by and check out all the services offered by the library.

Rev. Joe Schulte came by the office this week and announced that “A Harvey Christmas” raised $1,300 for Hurricane Harvey relief. Joe will be leaving Friona at the end of January. He plans on heading north. Good luck Joe! You will be missed.

Due to the Primary Election on Tuesday, March 6, the Chamber banquet had to be moved to Thursday, March 8. Tickets are $25 each. Get your nominations into the Chamber office by Friday, February 23 at 5 p.m.

The Chamber reminds everyone that had Christmas lights and decorations at the City Park, they need to be picked up as soon as possible.

If you like basketball, the Friona Junior High Basketball Tournament starts Thursday, January 11 and continues on Saturday, January 13. The brackets are in this issue of the Friona Star.

The FHS basketball teams will host Slaton on Friday, January 12. Junior Varsity boys and girls games start at 5 p.m. in the high school gyms followed by the Varsity girls at 6:30 p.m. and the Varsity boys at 8 p.m.

Area band auditions will be on Saturday, January 13 in Levelland. Good Luck Chieftain Band!

FHS powerlifters will be competing at Plainview on Saturday, January 13. Way to go!

There is no school on Monday, January 15 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day but the 4-H and FFA exhibitors will be busy showing their animals at the Friona Livestock Show starting with weigh-in at 1:30 p.m. The show starts at 2 p.m.

If you are interested in pre-natal classes, Parmer Medical Center will be offering a class on Saturday, January 13 from 9-10 a.m.

A few yard signs are popping up for candidates in the Parmer County March 3 Primary Election. The offices and candidates are: Sandra Warren (District Clerk); Trey Ellis (County Judge); Gerri Bowers and Susan (Susie) Spring (County Clerk); Jo Beth Gipson and Ross Paiz (Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1); Deena Lucero Leuea (Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2); Pamela Haseloff (Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3); Bailey Warren Windham and Sharon May (County Treasurer); Steve Cockerham and Charles Wilkins (County Commissioner, Precinct 2); Casey Russell (County Commissioner, Precinct 4); Awyna Sanchez (Tax Assessor-Collector); and Bill White (Republican Party Chairman).

January is School Board Recognition Month. Thank you to all the FISD Board of Trustees for all the hard work you do for our children and community.

Happy Birthday wished go out to Margaret Duggins who will be celebrating her 90th birthday with family and friends on Saturday, January 13. Her daughter, Sharla, is hosting the party at the Friona Senior Center at 1410 Washington from 2-4 p.m. Birthday cards are welcome. Please no presents.

Mark you calendar for a fun time at Community Bingo at Prairie Acres on Saturday, January 27 at 3 p.m. They will be serving goodies and prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Prairie Acres Family Bingo Night is Tuesday, January 16 at 7 p.m.

The Friona Vocational Agriculture Association is raffling off four quarters of beef on February 15 at noon. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from Greg O’Brian, Tracy Bunker, Kody Kimbrough, Clint Hurst, Bill White or at Friona Wheat Growers. They will also be taking donations to support the Friona FFA and Friona 4-H program.

Bragging time is here! The Friona Star is selling Valentines. Forms are available at the Star office. Valentines are only $10 for pictures with 1-2 people and $20 for pictures with three or more people. Deadline to turn in your Valentines pictures is Monday, February 5 at 5 p.m.

Friona Primary School will hold a Book Fair January 22-26. This is a great time to get those books for your kids at a good price and help the school at one time.
