Melissa and Manuel Rodriguez Peña welcome their new baby girl Mia to the world. They are residents of Friona. Melissa works at Family Dollar and Manuel at Hi-Pro. Their baby was born in Alamogardo, New Mexico where Melissa’s mother lives. Complications occurred and the baby was transferred to El Paso. Melissa had to remain in Alamogardo for surgery due to a massive infection. Since neither Melissa nor Manuel have been able to work, the family could use financial help. December 7 is the 77-year anniversary of Pearl Harbor. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory, on the morning of December 7, 1941. The attack, also known as the Battle of Pearl Harbor, led to the United States’ entry into World War II.

The Friona Chamber of Commerce is once again hosting Ho! Ho! Home for the Holidays! All you have to do is shop locally and sign up to win $25 in Friona Bucks at local businesses. The drawing will be held on Wednesday, December 19 for winners at each participating business. There will also be a grand prize of $100 in Friona Bucks. Participating businesses are Bi-Wize Pharmacy, Blackburn Hardware, A-1 Service, H&R Block, Hunan Star II, Ivy Cottage Flowers & Gifts, Kendrick Oil/Farm Store, Lowes Supermarket, Malouf’s Fabrics, Milk House Market, and Veterinary Industries.

Friona Buyers’ Club is selling tickets for the chance to win a pistol. Proceeds will be used for the purchase of Friona FFA and 4-H livestock projects at the county livestock show. The winner will have the option to pick 1 out of the 3 pistols. The winners choices will be: Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380, Sig Sauer SP2022 40sw, Glock G27 40sw. The drawing will be held at the Friona Wheat Growers on Friday, December 14, 2018 at noon. The winner must be 18 years of age or older. The ticket donations will be $10.00 for one donation or 3 for $25.

The Empty Stocking Fund provides clothes and a toy to local needy children as determined by school officials. Donations can be taken to Friona InterBank or co-chairpersons Holly Campbell and Jyl Grimsley.

Friona High School is looking for judges for the Bobsled Classic Speech Tournament. The tournament will be Saturday December 15 at 8 a.m. at Friona High School. Call FISD at 250-3951 if you are interested in judging.

The Friona High School invites you to attend the 2018 Bobsled Classic on December 15, 2018. Preliminary debate rounds will be held at the Elementary School. All semis and finals will be held at the High School. If necessary, debate quarter-finals will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Elementary School as well.

FISD will be having an early release on December 20th and 21st. Christmas break is December 24th through January 4.

Friona ISD students in Kindergarten – 12th grade are eligible for parent or teacher nominations to the Gifted and Talented Program offered by Friona ISD for the 2019-2020 school year. Parents who desire to nominate their child for this program may contact the principal or counselor in their child’s building for the appropriate form. Forms need to be completed and returned to the principal by January 31, 2019. A certified Gifted and Talented teacher will administer the necessary tests for admission to the program.

George Herbert Walker Bush, our 41st president from 1989 to 1993 passed away this past Friday, November 30, 2018. Memorial services for President George H.W. Bush began on Monday and will take place for four days until he is laid to rest in Texas on Thursday. Bush died on Friday at the age of 94 and this week will be honored in Washington, DC, and his home state of Texas. He laid in state in the US Capitol Rotunda starting on Monday evening. A funeral at the Washington National Cathedral for him will take place on Wednesday at 11 am Eastern. It will be aired live on C-SPAN and major television networks. On Thursday, a separate funeral service will take place for him at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston before he is buried at the family plot at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas, alongside his wife, Barbara, and his daughter, Robin.
