WFAA in Dallas features photo by Friona resident

Friona, Texas was mentioned on the WFAA Dallas news channel last week for a photo that was submitted of a somewhat rare formation of clouds called Mammatus. The photo, taken by Landon Weatherly, was submitted to the news station by former Friona resident Justin Grimsley, who inquired about the cause of this specific type of cloud. WFAA’s Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus showed various other Mammatus formations sent in by Texas residents before pausing on the photo submitted by Justin and using it to describe the process. He explains how updrafts take moisture-rich air into a storm while heavier, more saturated air sinks, forming the pouch-like clouds in the sky. He also explained to one of the newscasters that Friona is in the panhandle, since upon asking, she claimed she did not know. (more...)

Reception held to honor retiring teachers

The Friona Teacher’s Organization (FTO) held a reception for the five teachers who are retiring this year. The event was held on Tuesday in the Board Meeting Room at the FISD Administration Building. Those retiring and their years of service are: (l-r) Lisa Reed, who has worked 22 years at Friona and 26 total; Carla Scott, who has worked all 23 years at Friona; Randy Johnson, was has worked 17 years at Friona and 19 total; Roberta Johnson, who has worked 21 years at Friona and 28 total; and Leslie Wright, who has worked 20 years at Friona and 29 years total.
