VoAg group helps FCCLA recover from loss

Friona FCCLA officers Blanca Chavez (President), Elaney Arzate (Vice President) and Lilly Abarca (Secretary) traveled to Dallas to attend the FCCLA Fall Conference on November 12th and 13th. Near the end of this trip, the school suburban was broken into and over $3,000 in personal belongings, along with several school issued belongings, were stolen from the vehicle. The Friona Vocational Agriculture Association has graciously helped the Friona FCCLA chapter by donating the funds to recover all of the lost personal belongings. To help raise funds for Friona FCCLA, the Friona Vocational Agriculture Association will be hosting a pancake supper on Sunday, April 30th. More details will be coming soon. Funds raised from this supper will also help Friona FCCLA members attend the FCCLA State Conference this weekend, March 30 - April 2 in Dallas. The Friona FCCLA Chapter, advisor Erin Barnett and the Friona Vocational Agriculture Association would like to thank everyone who continues to support their organizations in providing vocational training for High School students.

Assault victims now have instant access to help

Parmer Medical Center, through a partnership with the Texas Teleforensic Remote Assistance Center (Tex-TRAC), will be able to assist sexual assault victims ages 13 and older in conducting sexual assault forensic exams with guidance from a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) through the Telehealth cart starting April 3rd, 2023.

Tex-TRAC TeleSANEs are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and provide a seamless interaction between hospital nurses and victims during sexual assault forensic examinations by using these telehealth carts with specially designed software. The TeleSANEs, via a secure internet connection, can advise and assist hospital nurses as they conduct the lengthy sexual assault exams, which are known to take three to six hours on average to complete.

Currently, sexual assault victims in Parmer County and surrounding counties must be transported to local hospitals in those counties by either EMS, law enforcement, or private vehicle, which compounds the traumatic stress on the victim as well as preventing first responders from returning to their duties sooner.

Tex-TRAC, part of the Texas A&M Health Center of Excellence in Forensic Nursing, was established with federal grant funding from the Office for Victims of Crime and state funding from the Office of the Attorney General to provide a SANE telehealth program to serve rural and underserved communities in Texas.

Seeing Stars - This week sky gazers had the opportunity to see Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, and the moon in the western sky after sunset. Four of the planets were visible to the naked eye, but you needed binoculars to see Uranus. Sometimes you don't need a punchline, the story is enough. Also, according to a 70s pop band, when the moon is in the 7th house and Jupiter aligns with Mars, then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars.

Friends host book reading event

Friends of the Library hosted a "Book Reading with Teddy Jones" last Saturday in the Friona Public Library. Friends Vice President Esmeralda Mills welcomed attendees and introduced the hometown author. Ms. Jones gave a brief overview and read excerpts from the new book, Marva Cope, which is the latest novel in the Jackson's Pond series. Next, the audience was given the opportunity to ask the author questions about her career, past writings, and the new book. Joy Morton received a free copy of Slanted Light, in a drawing held after the Q&A session. Friends of the Library members served punch and snacks while Ms. Jones signed books and posed for pictures.

Thanks to a generous donation, the Friona Volunteer Fire Department was able to purchase dress uniforms. Fire department members wore them for the first time in honor of longtime fire wife, Carolin Reeve, who passed away March 18th. Carolin's husband, Glenn, has been with the fire department for 67 years.
