The Friona High School Squaws Powerlifting team sent 11 lifters to Shamrock HS on March 4th to compete in the Regional Meet. All the lifters competed hard and there were a lot of personal bests set that day.

The four medalists at the meet for the Squaws were Naara Saucedo, 4th place; Reyna Arias, 2nd place; Mercedes Espinoza, 3rd place; and Marie Phillips, 2nd place. Sophomores Reyna Arias and Marie Phillips will be representing Friona High School at the THSWPA small 3A State Championships which will be held in Frisco, Texas on Thursday, March 16th. Go Bid Red!!!

Thank You Friona

The folks at the 6th St. Church of Christ would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to our community. For the better part of 30 years, we have supported a clothing work that benefited two children's homes. It started with the Medina Children's Home in Medina, Texas, who later joined forces with the Boles Home in Quinlan, Texas to form Arms of Hope. Through your generous donations we have been able to send thousands of pounds of clothing to this organization that serves children in need and single mothers trying to make ends meet. The clothing and other items over the years have served in three basic ways. First the two homes were able to use for the children they served, Second, items that were not able to be used but in good condition were sold through their thrift store and finally, worn out clothing items were contracted to a recycling center and made into rags. Pretty much everything was used in some capacity. Your help made that work thrive for all these years.

Sadly, Arms of Hope had to cut back on travel to the panhandle due to fuel costs, as those expenses have made it cost prohibitive for that work to continue here. At the end of February they came for the last time and took the containers with them. We understand there is a season for everything as we are prayerful for Arms of Hope as they continue to serve children and single parent families. We are no longer accepting any items as we no longer have an outlet for the volume that was being produced. Thank you again, Friona is a special place with generous hearts, know that we pray thankfully for your kindness. God bless and to God be the glory. Sincerely, 6th St. Church of Christ family

Each year, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The annual event is designed to encourage reading in children and is fostered through the schools. Teachers and students at Friona Primary School celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday by dressing as one of his characters.

Talking Trash - The roll-off dumpsters were popular last Saturday. I had to wait in line as many residents were "spring cleaning" after the big dirt storm. Help spread the word that the roll-off dumpsters are open at East 8th & Jackson Ave. from 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. the first Saturday of each month. This free service allows you to dispose of items that do not belong in the regular trash dumpsters including metal, mattresses, furniture, appliances, etc. Let's "Keep Friona Clean".

National Potato Chip Day - America's #1 snack food will be celebrated on Tuesday. On August 24, 1853, an unhappy restaurant customer kept sending his potatoes back to the kitchen, complaining they were thick and soggy. Chef George Crum decided to slice the potatoes as thin as possible, frying them until crisp and adding extra salt. To the chef's surprise, the customer loved them. The crispy potatoes became a regular item on the restaurant's menu and the rest is history.

Two Parmer County Veterans receive Quilts of Valor recognition

On Saturday, March 4, 2023, Mrs. Valencia Meier, along with members of the Parmer County American Legion Post 206, presented two PCAL Post 206 members with Quilts of Valor for their military service.

Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 when Catherine Roberts, the mother of a deployed soldier, experienced a dream. In this dream, she saw a soldier alone in the dark, foreboding room, overcome with despair. Then in a subsequent vision, that same soldier was wrapped in a quilt. The room had become calm and tranquil, void of the war demons.

She determined at that moment that quilts equal comfort and healing. She gathered family and friends, and they began making quilts for returning soldiers. The first Quilt of Valor was awarded at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2003.

A Quilt of Valor is awarded, not as a gift. A Quilt of Valor would unequivocally say "Thank you", for your service, sacrifice, and valor in serving our Nation. Photos by Richard Villarreal, and Darlene Miller
