A peanut farmer from Georgia, Carter rose through the political ranks quickly to become governor and then president, defeating Gerald Ford in 1976.
His presidency from 1977 to 1981 saw achievements like the Camp David Accords but was overshadowed by economic challenges and the Iran hostage crisis.
