Dr. Jubay Announces Retirement

Community Minded — Dr. Jubay received recognition as the “Citizen of the Year” at the 2021 Friona Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture’s Annual Awards Banquet.

-

On October 16, 1993, the Friona Star published an article announcing the arrival of a new physician in town, Felipe L. Jubay, Jr., M.D. In the almost 32 years since then, Dr. Jubay has been a solid foundation of our healthcare here in Parmer County and the surrounding area. He has cared for us, coached us, held our hands when things became difficult or sad, cheered us on when we needed encouragement. He treated us for colds and flus and viruses as well as bigger, more complicated diagnosis and chronic illnesses.

He watched over us and loved us for a long time. Dr Jubay has made the difficult decision to retire from his practice here in Friona and move to Florida so he and Dita can be close to their family. We will miss him tremendously, but we also wish him and Dita the very best that life can offer in this next chapter of their lives.

His last day to see patients in the clinic is January 30, 2025.

There will be a retirement celebration for Dr Jubay and Dita in the spring. The date and location will be announced when all of the details are confirmed. This will afford everyone the opportunity to say farewell and convey their best wishes.

Overpass Approved — Rob Pomper, editor of The State Line Tribune, reported last week that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration approved federal funding of grants for the elimination of railroad crossings across the nation. The third largest of those grants is the new overpass proposed just west of Texico. The proposed overpass would allow the closure of the main railroad crossing at Highway 84. BNSF Railway has plans to add a third track in near future which would add to the already long “wait time” for vehicle traffic. The overpass project is expected to take 2-3 years to complete.

Sunday is Peanut Brittle Day — Peanut Brittle includes caramelized sugar or corn syrup. Nuts are added to the molten sugar and then poured onto a flat surface such as granite or marble and smoothed into a thin sheet. The candy cools into a hard, brittle treat broken into smaller pieces. Some of the best brittles are hand-stretched into a thin, easily cracked candy that melts in the mouth. The history of peanut brittle is uncertain, though one legend says it was all a mistake. The story goes that a southern woman was making taffy, and instead of using cream of tartar, she used baking soda by accident.
