County receives new ATV — After Monday’s Commissioner Court meeting, Invenergy representatives presented Parmer County with a $10,000 check to purchase an ATV for the Sheriff’s Office. Test Drive — Sheriff Geske demonstrates all the “bells & whistles” on the new Kubota Sidekick RTV XG850 donated by Invenergy. The ATV was purchased from LoneStar Ag, the Kubota dealership located in Friona.

FHS Senior Night — Next Tuesday evening February 4th is Mid-Winter Senior Recognition Night which recognizes high school seniors involved in basketball, powerlifting, and cheerleading as well as their families. The Friona Star will have coverage of the event in next week’s edition.

New State Park — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) laid the groundwork for a new state park in Central Texas with the purchase of 2,020 acres in Burnet County. The property includes two miles along the Colorado River and is located across the river from Colorado Bend State Park. Its purchase solidifies phase one of a potential two-phase property purchase to create a new state park comprising more than 3,000 acres.

Jobs Leader — Texas is America’s undisputed jobs leader for the third year in a row, with more jobs added in Texas in 2024 than in any other state. Jobs data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) confirms Texas added the most jobs in the nation from December 2023 to December 2024 with a gain of 284,200 nonfarm jobs, significantly ahead of all other states.

Utility Assistance — Head to your local Panhandle Community Services office on February 4th for an Utility Application. Finished applications and all documents need to be returned by February 6th. Required documents are birth certificate, photo ID, proof of income, utility bills, and social security card (if applicable). Copies are needed for each household member.

Tumbling Tumbleweeds — These wind-blown nomads formed their own congregation on the northeast side of the Congregational Church last week. Four pickup loads later, they found their new home in the city’s brush pile just south of center field at the old baseball park.
The City will open up the roll-off box this Saturday, Feb. 1, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Please come by to dump those items that don’t belong in your dumpster and do your part to help Keep Friona Clean!
The roll-off box is located at East 8th and South Jackson Ave. It is a free service provided to Friona residents. Examples of items not allowed in dumpsters includes: steel and metal, mattresses and furniture, refrigerators/AC units, paint cans (with or without liquids), electronics and appliances, drums/barrels, brick, wood and concrete, railroad ties. Items not accepted in the roll-off box are tires, oil and tree limbs. To dispose of these items, please contact the City office at 806-250-2761.
