The Sounds of Music — These FHS students competed at the UIL solo and ensemble competition last Saturday. Basketball Bros. — Noah and Nash Rigler are members of the Abernathy Antelope basketball team which made a run in the playoffs the past couple of weeks. The Antelopes won their Bi-District and Area playoff games before their season came to an end in the Regional Semifinals. Noah, a senior at AHS, played four years on the Varsity Team and Nash, a freshman at AHS, played on the JV Team this year and joined the varsity for the playoffs. Parents are Mandy (Geries) Rigler, left, and Nathan Rigler, right. Grandparents are Randy & Sarah Geries. Mandy is a 2003 graduate of Friona High School. Noah and Nash are the grandnephews of the Friona Star editor.

Town Talk

It’s Whats For Dinner — St. Teresa’s Catholic Church will host its annual Mexican Dinner on Sunday, March 2nd from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in St. Teresa’s Hall. The meal consists of two beef enchiladas, one taco, beans, rice, chips & salsa, drinks, and dessert. Donations are $15.00 for adults and $8.00 for children under 10. Take-out available. See you there.

Crop Conference — A Tri-County Crop Conference is scheduled for Monday, March 3rd at the XIT Building located at 215 North Street in Bovina. The event starts at 8 a.m. and for more information call the extension office at 806-251-5120.

Circus Coming To Town — City Star Circus will be in Friona for 3 days only at the Clarence Monroe Community Center. Show time for Friday, February 28th is 7:30 p.m. There will be two shows on Saturday, March 1st beginning at 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Three shows are scheduled for Sunday, March 2nd beginning at 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. The performances will originally scheduled for last week.

Ash Wednesday — This day signals the beginning of Lenten season for Christians. It takes place 46 days before Easter and the day after Shrove Tuesday. Those who celebrate Ash Wednesday reflect, fast, repent and celebrate. The ashes represent death and repentance and Ash Wednesday services focus on both. In many churches, the ashes are made from the palm branches that are burned from the previous Palm Sunday service.

Pig Out! — Pig Day is March 1st. Pigs are clever and intelligent animals. However, most people are not aware of their high level of intelligence. Some are household pets that can be trained and taught tricks (see More Show Biz below). No animal brings home the bacon like a pig.

Graduation

Jaden Breann Pigg of Amarillo, daughter of Jon & Julie Brown Pigg of Nazareth, graduated from West Texas A&M University on December 13, 2024 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports and Exercise Science.

Jaden is currently employed at Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital (BSA) in Amarillo. She plans to pursue a career in Physical Therapy.

Grandparents are Gary & Barbara Brown of Friona, Mike & Barbara Mayfield Pigg of Silverton, and Barbara Scroggins of Amarillo. Great Grandmother is Delores Pigg of Quitaque.
