Josefa “Josie” Hernandez De La Cruz passed away September 17, 2025 surrounded by most of her family, after hearing prayers that comforted her. She left her family peacefully, and amongst the collective sorrow of those who loved her. Family Directed Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Union Congregational Church of Friona with Randa Reeve, officiating. Arrangements entrusted to HANSARD FAMILY Funeral Home of Friona.
Josie was born November 9, 1949 in Paducah, Texas to Anita and Rosario Hernandez. She was the fifth child in a family of twelve children. The family were hardworking migrant farm workers, unsung American heroes, whose labor produced abundant and affordable food for the nation. They crossed the country in every direction, doing what needed to be done on farms and orchards, all of them.
Josie spent her adult years mostly in this area, primarily in Bovina and later, Clovis. She reared her own family here. Josie is a Christian, loved the scriptures, and a well-used Bible is among her worldly possessions. The love of her children could be found in her home, where the walls were covered with pictures of her kids, grandkids, their spouses, all ages, and any tabletop or shelf had more pictures, individual and groups. She was a proud mama!
Her health began to fail her. She spent the last part of her life enduring a cascade of indignities, from illness, painful hospitalizations, leaving old friends in Clovis, advancing age, gradual loss of independence, and often confided that she was ready to leave this earth for a better place.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anita Renteria Hernandez, Rosario Hernandez; son Gabriel De La Cruz, sisters Carmen Cerda and Santos Salinas, brothers Rosario Hernandez Jr and Juan Hernandez, daughter Yolanda De La Cruz, grandson Tommy Fuentes, great grandchildren Abigail Rodriguez, Isaac Madrigal.
Survivors are brothers, Rudy and Rene, of Portales, NM; Roy and Oscar of Hale Center,; sisters, Martha Montelongo of Elsa, TX, Juanita Plasentio and Linda Ortiz of Hale Center. Philip Weatherly passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. He graced this world for 86 remarkable years, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. He was born on March 5, 1939, in Roxton, Texas to Clyde and Lois Weatherly. Philip’s life was built on faith, family, friendship, and enjoying God’s creations in the great outdoors
On December 27, 1958, Philip married the love of his life, Phila May Buske in Friona, Texas. Their 66 years of unwavering devotion to each other were rooted in their shared faith and strong work ethic. Whether working on the farm or adventuring in the Colorado mountains, Philip embraced life to the fullest. He worked hard to provide for his family, teaching life lessons to his children, and ensuring they carried on his legacy of love, kindness, and a strong relationship with God.
Philip had many passions, many of which were centered around the great outdoors. He loved digging in the dirt to ensure the next crop, raising cattle and checking on them by horseback, playing golf with friends and family, trekking the mountain trails in search of big game, sneaking up a mountain stream to cast his fly into a bubbling pool, and teaching friends and family to enjoy these pursuits.
The farm and ranch life that Philip so dearly loved, provided for his family for 25 years. When he and Phila successfully sent their children off into the world to find their own adventures, they answered the call of the mountains and headed to Colorado to live their next dream. Philip worked for Skyland Country Club in Crested Butte, Colorado for the next 20 years, pursuing his love of hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and ensuring ALL the extended family had a place to come visit and enjoy the same. He and Phila retired to Lubbock, Texas in 2007 and were involved at Southcrest Baptist Church.
Philip’s faith was his anchor, and he was always ready to share Jesus with others. He began his faith journey at First Baptist Church Friona, Texas where he served as a deacon for many years. Philip taught a Sunday school class of teenage boys showing them the path to salvation as well as how to pitch a tent and start a campfire while taking the class on an overnight adventure. He continued his devotion to God attending church in Crested Butte and Gunnison. His faith never wavered, even when faced with cancer or enduring the years of pain caused by a horse accident that left him with a broken neck. Philip always trusted the lord to get him through trials and tribulations. He had many reasons to be angry and discouraged but always chose gentleness and kindness instead.
Philip’s life was filled with many interests and hobbies—playing dominoes with the guys when it was too wet to plow, enjoying a game of bridge with Phila and her sisters and husbands, teaching his children to respect nature and cook the best breakfast over a campfire, playing tennis, hitting the ski slopes with family and friends, and learning how to fix anything that broke with bailing wire and duct tape.
Above all, Philip cherished his family: his beloved wife Phila; his children, Park Weatherly and wife Tracy of Lubbock; Pepper Weatherly and wife Darla of Rio Rancho, NM; and Penni Hudson and husband Matt of Nairobi, Kenya; his grandchildren, Nicole (Kevin) Goodman, Clayton (Sarah) Weatherly, Blakley Weatherly, Brady Stark, Alexandria Weatherly, Adyson Weatherly, Holden (Megan) Hudson, and Haden (Matt) Marrs; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Bill (Becky) Weatherly of Lubbock.
Philip was preceded in death by his wife, and lifelong best friend, Phila, his parents, Clyde and Lois Weatherly, his brothers, Gene Weatherly, James Weatherly, and his sister Celia Dee Loflin.
His legacy is one of faith, gentleness, kindness, and concern for others over himself. He showed unconditional love, cherished his family and friends, and embraced life to the fullest. His love of life will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
