Mary Hazel Maddox, 89, joins her beloved husband, Cecil, in life-everlasting. She passed peacefully into the hands of God on April 28, 2026.
Born on October 26, 1936, in Hart, Texas, to Clury and Hazel Phillips, Mary was the youngest of four girls. She grew up on the family farm outside of Olton, Texas, where she learned the value of hard work helping in the fields alongside her sisters. Mary attended West Texas State College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She dedicated her professional life to education, serving as an elementary school teacher. She taught both third and fourth – but mostly fourth – grades.
Her life’s great romance began in high school when she met her sweetheart, Cecil Maddox. They attended college together and were wed in Olton, Texas on January 26, 1958. The couple resided in Friona, Texas, from 1961 until 2008, when they relocated to Windsor, Colorado. Together, Cecil and Mary raised a wonderful daughter, Mika. Always there to support her child, Mary was the loudest fan in the stands at all of Mika’s games. Mary loved her family more than life itself. Throughout almost 66 years of marriage, Mary was the quiet, kind support behind everything—the stable foundation upon which her family was built.
Mary loved watching sports. She was an avid fan of Texas Tech, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Colorado Rockies. When she wasn’t cheering from the sidelines, she enjoyed the strategy of bridge, various card games, and the challenge of a good puzzle. A woman of deep faith, Mary was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Friona and later at Front Range Baptist Church in Fort Collins. To those who knew her, she was simply the most loving person they had ever met—sweet to the very core. She will be remembered as a woman defined by her unwavering kindness and quiet strength, who leaves a legacy of love and devotion to her family.
Left to carry on that legacy is Mary’s daughter, Mika Schneider, her husband Myron, and their children, Erin and Ian. She is also survived by a sister, Gwen Ziska. Mary loved each and every one of her sisters’ children: Phillip, Linda, Larry, Cheryl, and Laurie, and all of Cecil’s many nieces and nephews.
Mary is greeted in Heaven by her beloved husband, Cecil Maddox; her parents Clury & Hazel; her sister LaNelle Waldrop and her husband Hubert; sister Joy Lambright and her husband Milford; her nephew, Brian Ziska; and by her infant grandchildren, Isaac, Mathew, and Christina Schneider.
Services for Mary were held on Tuesday, May 5th, 2026 at Resthaven Funeral Home & Memory Gardens in Fort Collins, Colorado. For those that wished to say their final goodbyes, there was a time for viewing at 1pm, followed by Mary’s Memorial Service at 2pm, and her Burial Service immediately after.
