Town Talk II

by Ron Carr

Well okay then. We wanted moisture and beginning Saturday afternoon and most of the day Sunday we were covered with 8-inches of snow. Temps remained in the 20s so melting has been slow. I know we sometimes criticize the TxDOT workers but let’s send a big thank you their way for all of the snowplowing and sanding they did all weekend. Should be all cleared by Thanksgiving but if you are traveling like I am, please be vigilant and safe.

I’ll be driving to Denton Thursday for the weekend to visit with my baby girl Megan, son Casey in Frisco, and daughter Candee in Coppell. Daughter Kirsten and family are off on a weeklong cruise. We will probably partake of a Thanksgiving repast at the local Cracker Barrel and do some shopping stuff. Hope you all have a nice blessed Thanksgiving with family and friends. We have a lot to be thankful for.

Friona’s official weather guy John Gurley says the 8-inches of snow we received equals .80” of moisture.

Once again Friona folks were generous in their giving as the Coffee Memorial Blood Center reported that 61 units of blood were donated at last Thursday’s Friona blood drive. It was a cold windy day but you turned out to give the gift of life. After a tragic accident near Vega Friday night killed three people and sent about 20 to Amarillo hospitals, Coffee Memorial issued a call for blood donations, especially O-negative. Proves that all blood donations are critical and appreciated. Thanks for giving and thanks to the Cub Scouts and Noon Lions for helping with the blood drive.

Bessie Holt, our blood drive coordinator, says that a pink baby cap and a wrist brace were left at the blood drive Thursday. She will be glad to get them back their owners. You can call Bessie at 806-265-5331.

I went by the Country Market Arts & Crafts show Saturday morning. No doubt the weather affected attendance but there was a good crowd while I was there, including the ladies and children modeling in Ingram’s style show. Canna Ray’s concession food was once again a big hit. I had a biscuit and gravy that was outstanding and the brisket plate I took home for later was equally delicious. Thanks to all the vendors for participating.

Chieftain basketball player Dallin Woods broke his little finger in a game with Lubbock Christian November 15. Monday he had surgery in Lubbock and is doing well. His dad, Coach David Woods said he will be able to play with a protective cast.

Also, FHS student Antonio Adame suffered damage to some vertebrae in a sledding accident in the snow the past weekend. Some students were sledding at the Hwy 214 overpass when the accident happened. He was in the hospital but released Monday morning. He will be going to either Amarillo or Lubbock for treatment we are told. Hope both of these boys have a speedy recovery.

Next week, on Tuesday, Sylvia Ingram and Misty Frye will have their annual Christmas open houses. Ingram’s and Ivy Cottage have all sorts of gift ideas for your Christmas shopping. They are participating in the Chamber’s Ho! Ho! Home for the Holidays shop local promotion. Register to win $25 or $100 in Friona Bucks at these and other participating merchants. Stop by for refreshments and some nice shopping.

In case you are wondering, the weekly Sheriff’s Report was not in the paper last week because no one was arrested. It is not in the paper this week because the lady at the Sheriff’s office that prepares the report was off work this week.

I went over to the Bovina Rec Center Wednesday Nov 20 to eat steak. Cargill Cattle Feeders served a nice steak meal for the Texico, Farwell, Lazbuddie, Rhea, and Bovina fire departments. Fernando Moreno who is charge of Cargill Cattle’s mill invited me over. It was a nice evening and an especially tasty dinner. Thanks for the invite.

From County Extension Agent Monti Vandiver: July 2014 wheat prices hold the line at $6.85 on support from the corn market. Corn use for fuel and exports continues strong; feed use facing a tradeoff of lower cattle on feed numbers and higher broiler placements.

The Easter Lions turkey shoot has been rescheduled for Sunday December 1. It was snowed out last weekend. It is south of Hereford at the intersection of FM1055 and FM2397. Rounds get underway at 1:00 p.m. and will continue until sunset.

Ribbon cutting and grand opening on Monday for Davy Howard’s store, Interior Expressions, at 8th and Main. Both his store and Sylvia Ingram’s store will be open later on Monday evening during Christmas in the Park.

We will be back on Monday and getting into the Christmas spirit. We will be announcing a rate increase as of January 1 and a familiar name returns to our Friona Star staff. Our Christmas paper will be December 19. We will not be publishing a paper during the Christmas week. More about all of this later. In the meantime, Happy Thanksgiving wherever you may be. Until then!
