District CX Debate champions Haden Smiley and Holly Johnston, with speech and drama teacher Erika Montana will be headed to Austin for the State Debate competition March 10-12. The duo went to the state debate meet last year after finishing second in district. Haden is a sophomore and Holly is a junior.

Town Talk II

The talk of the town and the Panhandle this week is the blizzard that buried Parmer County on Monday. As predicted blowing snow overnight Sunday until Monday afternoon caused massive drifts, road closures, and a halt to mail delivery and closing of schools and businesses. I did not venture out of the house until Tuesday morning. Official weather guy John Gurley said he recorded 7-inches of snow, 0.77” moisture. Seemed like more than that to most of us.

The county commissioners meeting scheduled for Monday was rescheduled for Friday March 1 at 10 a.m. The courthouse was closed Monday due to the blizzard that paralyzed the county. County Judge Trey Ellis lifted the burn ban this week until the Friday meeting when the commissioners will decide on whether to extend it. HPWD Board approves deadline extension

Following a Feb. 19 public hearing, the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District (HPWD) Board of Directors unanimously approved rule amendments allowing an extension of the reporting deadline for groundwater produced during calendar year 2012.

Problems with the district’s meter reporting web site prompted the rule amendment which extends the production reporting deadline to June 1, 2013. The first annual production reports for calendar year 2012 were to be submitted to the district no later than March 1, 2013. (more...)
