The varsity Squaws brought home the silver bracket championship from the Shallowater tournament. Back row, l-r, Kim DeWit, Christina Green, Courtney Bunker, Paige Upton, Ariana Moreno, Samantha Davila, Emily Barraza; front, l-r, Aubrey Williams, Kendall Barnett, and Gaby Chavez. The Squaws next home game is Tuesday September 2 vs. Melrose. JV at 5:30 p.m. and varsity a 7:00 p.m.

Town Talk II

Reading Rocks. The Friona Library’s pre-school story time begins September 4 from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. for kids that are 3-years-old by September 1. Registration began this week. Call the library at 250-3200 for registration info. It is a great program to get your little ones interested in reading.

Eugene and Patsy Bandy will celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary Saturday August 30. That is a long time but I bet it went by pretty fast. Congratulations you two.

Football contest starts next week

The annual Friona Star football contest will begin in the Thursday September 4 newspaper. The contest will run for 12 weeks with a $25 cash prize to the weekly winner and a $100 grand prize to the overall point winner. In case of a tie at the end of the 12 weeks the grand prize will be divided.

Each weekly contest will include 15 games, five each high school, college, and NFL. We will tally the weekly entries and keep a record of individual totals based on the number of correct games you pick. (more...)

The FHS coaching staff was challenged by Coach Don Carthel to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. At the end of “Meet the Chiefs and Squaws”, the football team took delight in dousing their coaches with buckets of ice water. The Chiefs travel to Olton on Friday to take on the Olton Mustangs at Mustang Field. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
