Congratulations to the Chieftain baseball team on reaching the area round of the playoffs. They lost two games to the Alpine Bucks but for the first time in Chieftain baseball history they won a playoff. The Chiefs beat Childress two out of three to claim the bi-district Golden Glove for the school trophy case. Chieftain senior Dallin Woods signed Tuesday to play baseball at Eastern New Mexico University.

A couple of anniversaries. Richie and Blaire Herring celebrated 13 years. Kim and Mitchell Smiley marked their 35th anniversary. Mitchell said it was 35 years of dreaded bliss but I’m sure he was only kidding and Kim has probably heard that before. Congratulations to you all.

FTO retirement reception May 25

The Friona Teachers Organization (FTO) will host a retirement reception on Wednesday, May 25 from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Friona ISD Administration building board room. Kenny Austin and Becky Albarado will be honored at the reception. The public is invited to attend and wish them well in their retirement.

Aristo Sham and Haden Smiley presented a concert Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church. Aristo is a renowned pianist from Hong Kong who has performed on five continents including for Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of York, and the Queen of Belgium. The two are roommates at Harvard University where Haden is in the Harvard Glee Club. Haden is the son of Kim and Mitchell Smiley, grandson of George and Aundrea Frye and Melba and the late Ron Smiley.
