NewsTown Talk

Friona firefighters responded to a fire call about 8:30 a.m. New Year’s Day at a portable classroom building on Euclid across from the primary school. The building housed a computer lab and classroom. Major damage was done to the interior and the building will have to be replaced. Initial reports say it was probably an electrical problem in the AC/heating unit but the official cause has not been determined. Insurance adjusters and fire investigators were expected to be on the scene this week. Students will have class in the Early Childhood building adjacent to the primary school. Classes resume Monday January 9.

Junior firefighter Tommy Hutchins, left, surveys the damage with firefighter Stephen Campbell, to the portable classroom building that burned New Year’s day morning. Four high school students, including Hutchins, are junior firefighters that answer fire calls and help the firemen. The other students are Hadley White, Mason Fleming, and Jonathan Lucatero. Will Cooper, a former junior firefighter, is now employed by the Canyon fire department/EMS. Thanks to our junior firemen and our volunteer firefighters for their service to the community. Even on New Year’s Day.
