The Friona Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call of a fire in the cotton modules from Friona Farmers Co-op Gin around 1:15 p.m. last Thursday. The fire destroyed 43 standard modules and one round bale. The blaze was attended to all night and was completely out by 8:15 a.m. Friday. The gin was down for 36 hours due to the fire but are now back to full capacity. The bale count as of Tuesday, November 21 was 7,819 bales with 675 more bales to be ginned.

Evil Queen Ursula (Lydia Alexander), right, declared to Ariel (Brooklynne Johnston)she was all powerful after stealing the King Triton’s trident during the FHS musical presentation of “Little Mermaid, Jr.” Sunday afternoon. The 2017 2-3A All-District Volleyball team was announced last week and the Friona High School Varsity Volleyball team coached by Bryan Masse had a number of players named. I owe Clarence Monroe and Joe Bob Mann apologies this week. I dropped an ‘o’ out of his name last week in the caption under the photo. Clarence, I apologize for misspelling Monroe.

I renamed Joe Bob and gave him the name Jim Bob last week. Joe Bob I apologize for renaming you.

I had a phone call this week that stated I had inadvertently relocated the new Friona City Manager Leander Davila. In the front-page article about the City Council meeting I stated that he was from Houston. I was corrected that he was from Austin. He will be relocating (the hard way) soon enough but I just moved him from one big city to another one with the stroke of a few keys. Leander, you have already moved twice and you aren’t even in Friona yet. (more...)

Mike Field wins Grand Prize

All the votes are tallied and, drum roll, please…the winner of the 2017 Friona Star Football Contest is….Mike Field. Mike took an early lead and held on to it to the very end and wins the $100 Grand Prize.

Mike and his brother, Jon, broke the 100-point barrier to come in first and second place. Mike scored 103 and Jon had 101. (more...)

Parmer Medical Center ranked in top 25 rural hospitals

Five of the eight Texas hospitals affiliated with Preferred Management Corporation were recognized nationally and at the state level in 2017 for outstanding achievement in operations, quality and patient satisfaction.

Kimble Hospital, Junction, Texas, and Collingsworth General Hospital, Wellington, Texas, were named among Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in the U.S., for overall performance and patient satisfaction, respectively. (more...)

Christmas is a time for giving back

The Christmas season is upon us and there are many local chances available to show your Christmas spirit.

The Friona Chamber of Commerce is once again hosting Ho! Ho! Home for the Holidays! All you have to do is shop locally and sign up to win $25 in Friona Bucks at local businesses. The drawing will be held on Monday, December 18 for winners at each participating business. There will also be a grand prize of $100 in Friona Bucks.
