Doctor’s Day at Parmer Medical Center was a great success this year. Over 100 guests attended the reception in appreciation of Friona’s wonderful team of physicians. We are thankful for our dedicated doctors and the entire PMC staff.

Kaye Funk is the Employee of the Month at Prairie Acres/Heritage Estates, and Randy Baize is Resident of the Month. Kaye Funk, who works for the housekeeping department, has been with them since September of 1980—a truly special gift to the Friona community. Thank you, Kaye, for all of your hard work and dedication in such an important role. In addition, thank you to Randy Baize for being a great resident, neighbor and friend to all. Congratulations to you both!

The 40th Lubbock Arts Festival will take place April 14-15, 2018 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center (1501 Mac Davis Lane). This two-day celebration is the largest fine art, fine craft event in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico, and is fun for the whole family! Arts include anything from paintings, pottery, jewelry, sculptures, wood, photography—you name it. Music and dance occur on various stages while there are even “Kid Stops” for the young ones to visit and make art projects. I have never been to this particular festival, but I have attended something similar in Denton called Arts & Jazz Fest, which always proved to be a great time. Events are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Hope you can make it!

The Friona Community Blood Drive will be Thursday, April 12 at Calvary Baptist Church in the Fellowship Hall from 12:00-7:00 p.m. Subway is generously donating sandwiches for this event, so be sure to come out and support with your own donation. Blood is needed every day, and if you’re like me and have benefited from a transfusion, you know the importance of blood donations. Thank you to those who have donated in the past and who plan to donate next week!

I finally got my taxes done for the year, with much help from Marla Hart over at H&R Block, who just so happened to be awarded Friona’s Chamber Member of the Month for April. This is the second year that I’ve been to Marla for my taxes, and I honestly enjoy the experience. Granted, my taxes are still fairly simple, but Marla is very thorough and charges a fair amount for her preparation services. Not to mention, the pleasant conversation and environment while in the office makes for a visit that is nothing short of delightful. Thank you, Marla and H&R Block, for serving our community!

If you tend to buy a Friona Star newspaper at one of the local gas stations, perhaps you should consider purchasing a yearly subscription! It is $30 for Parmer County residents and $40 for out-of-county, which gets you the Friona Star every week for an entire year. You may also choose an emailed version called e-Star for $24 per year.
