Billy Joe Mercer

Billy Joe Mercer, 84, of Friona, died Wednesday, November 25, 2015, in Friona. Funeral services were held Monday, November 30, 2015 at the Friona United Methodist Church in Friona with Rev. Skip Hodges, pastor, and Rev. H.E. “Steve” Stephens of Amarillo, officiating. Burial followed in the Friona Cemetery under the direction of Blackwell-Mullins Funeral Home of Friona.

Mr. Mercer was born September 8, 1931 in Clovis, New, Mexico to Charles Lloyd and Edith Mae Bomar Mercer. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean Conflict. He married Tommie Ruth Martin on September 3, 1955 in Friona where he was a dedicated, longtime area farmer. He was honored to be the Friona Man of the Year in 2004 and was President of the Friona Sr. Citizens from 2002 to 2004. He loved helping the elderly.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Robert E. Mercer.

He is survived by his wife, Tommie of Friona; one daughter, Leesa Stephens and husband H.E. “Steve” Stephens of Amarillo; one son, Tim Mercer and wife Cari of Coppell, Texas; five grandchildren, Hannah Patton and husband Larry of Corpus Christi, H.E.”Trey” Stephens III of New Orleans, Taylor Mercer and husband Alex Bedford of London, England, Garik Mercer of Norman, Ok., and Dillon Mercer of Lubbock; and six great-grandchildren.

Jonathan M. Smith

Jonathan M. Smith, 33, of Friona, died Monday, November 30, 2015 in Friona. Memorial services have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Thursday December 3, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Friona with Rev. Brett Hoyle, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Blackwell-Mullins Funeral Home of Friona.

Jonathan was born September 7, 1982 in Plainview to Melvin Henry and Linda Sue Walton Smith. He graduated from Hereford High School in 2001. Jonathan was manager of the Allsup’s Convenience Store in Bovina, was a known wrestling fan, loved music, musicals, theater and cooking.

He is survived by his parents of Friona; two brothers, Jeff Smith of Hereford, and Jason Colston of Friona; and one sister, Karen Smith of Abilene.
