Cheeseburger festival ranked #8

Friona’s designation as the “The Cheeseburger Capital of Texas” got a boost this week from the online rating site OnlyinYourState.com. The site ranked the top ten fairs and festivals that must be attended. The Texas Cheeseburger Cook-off was ranked number 8.

Plans for the 10th Annual Texas Cheeseburger Cook-off are already in the works for Saturday, July 18, 2015. Space is limited to the first 20 paid in advance teams. Entry fee is $100, which includes meat, cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, buns and ice. Deadline for signing up is Friday, July 10, 2015. All entries must be received by 3 p.m. on July 10 to ensure beef supplied by Cargill Meat Solutions of Friona.

Teams must set up at 7 a.m. the day of the contest. An orientation, rules and safety presentation will be given at 8 a.m. Judging begins at 11 a.m. with burgers going on sale to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

First and second place prizes will be determined by judges with cash prizes of $1,000 and $300. A People’s Choice Award will also be given as well as a prize for Cutest Campsite.

The 2015 Minute Men Car and Bike Show will also be held during the annual cook-off. Entry fees are $40 before July 1 and $50 after July 1. All of the car show proceeds will go to benefit the Friona Volunteer Fire Department. All entry fees are considered donations and are non-refundable.

Categories for the car show include: Classics (pre-1990), Classic modified, Late model (post-1990), Late model modified, sport and cruiser bikes.

Prizes/trophies will be awarded along with Fireman’s Choice (best overall). First place per class will be awarded free entry the following year.

Lineup begins at 9 a.m. with judging at 1 p.m. All entries are to report to the Friona Fire Station on Main Street for registration and parking instructions.

Vendors are encouraged to participate in the Cheeseburger Festival. Vendor fees are $30 for 10X10 ft. spaces and $60 for 10X20 ft. spaces. No meat vendors please, however all other food vendors are welcome. Vendors must remember this is a family event and to keep novelties, etc. geared toward families.
