Chiefs fall to Abernathy

The always tough Abernathy Antelopes came to town Friday night and handed the Chieftains a 38-13 loss. The Chiefs managed 205 yards on offense, 155 rushing and 50 passing. The passing yardage was gained on one play with Gabriel Chico completing a 50-yard halfback pass to Mason Mireles which set up the Chiefs only first half touchdown on a run by sophomore Marco Maldonado. The extra point snap was bobbled and the Chiefs trailed 32-6 at the half.

Chico led rushers with 79 yards on 19 carries. Maldonado was 3 for 57 yards and Luis Trejo was 7 for 14. Quarterback Cris Alvarez had 8 pass attempts with no completions and one interception.

Abernathy had 302 rushing yards and 66 passing. For the Chiefs defense Mason Mireles was credited with 9 tackles while Jose Rodriguez and Marco Maldonado had 5 each.

The Chieftains take a 1-1 record to Tulia Friday September 11 in a non-district battle with the Hornets. Tulia lost to the Stratford Elks last week 73-0.
