Chiefs beat Tulia, improve to 2-1

The Chieftains took to the road for their first away game of the year and brought back a 21-7 non-district win over the Tulia Hornets. The win improves the Chiefs to a 2-1 record with the Idalou Wildcats looming for Friday night's homecoming game. The homecoming queen will be crowned starting about 7:00 p.m. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

Senior running back Gabriel Chico had 23 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Luis Trejo, listed at 5'6" and 135 pounds, carried 15 times for 75 yards and sophomore Marco Maldonado, also listed at 5'7" and 135 pounds, added 6 carries and 51 yards and a touchdown.

Chico is the backup quarterback to starter Cris Alvarez. Early in the game coaches rotated Alvarez and Chico at the quarterback position causing a bit of confusion for the Hornets.

Alvarez completed 5 of 9 passes for 56 yards and had one interception. The Chiefs gained 338 yards of offense, 282 rushing and 56 passing while holding Tulia to 187 yards.

On defense Mason Mireles was credited with 7 tackles, Jose Rodriguez and Jonathon Hernandez with 6 each. Mireles and Adrian Munoz each had an interception.
