Town Talk II

by Ron Carr

Spring begins Sunday March 20 on Palm Sunday. Easter is Sunday March 27. Great spring weather is already here but supposed to be colder over the weekend. Did I see a forecast of possible "flurries?"

My daughter Candee Holmes came to visit over the weekend. She is my firstborn oldest child. Candee lives in Coppell with husband Walt. My kids don't get to visit often enough so it is always a special treat when they do.

Thursday, March 24, is the next Friona blood drive at Calvary Baptist Church from 12:00-7:00 p.m. Donors will be included in a drawing to win a 24" flat screen TV furnished by Bi-Wize. It is on display at the drugstore. Donors also get a t-shirt and hamburgers will be furnished by the Noon Lions Club. At the January blood drive Melissa Monreal won a $25 gift card from Interior Expressions and Yvette Garcia won a $20 gift card from Blackburn Hardware. Ashlee Willey of Amarillo won the fajita party from Jorge's and a big screen TV from Sears. Details of next week's drive are in an ad in this Friona Star. Give the gift of life. Thanks.

My friend Norma Whitten of Bovina called to say her granddaughter Chloee Whitten has some serious archery skills. Chloee is a 4th grader at Clovis Christian School. She celebrated her 10th birthday this week. Chloee's archery team placed 1st and she placed 1st in state archery competition in Albuquerque. She was 13th out of 826 overall participants from around New Mexico. That is impressive. Archery takes strength and a steady hand. Her photo with her bow is on this page.

Chloee is the daughter of Sherry and Brett Whitten of Bovina. She is the granddaughter of Earl and Norma Whitten of Bovina and Erma Brownd of Friona.

The Friona Donut Shop opened this week, according to owners Sopanha Eng and James Lu. The building next to Tasty Cream on Hwy 60 has a new yellow and red paint job. They bought the entire building complex including the old Budget Motel property which is now the Frio Apartments.

The Donut Shop is open from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. seven days a week. In addition to all kinds of donuts they serve kolaches, pigs in a blanket, biscuit sandwiches, croissant sandwiches, coffee and all drinks. The phone number is 806-344-6486. Stop by and welcome them to Friona and enjoy some goodies.

Union Colony Protective Services is a company from Kersey, Colorado that will be providing security for the wind turbine project that is about to get underway. They are running a classified ad this week looking for security guard personnel. I visited with General Manager Pete Haugh this week. They are interested in veterans, retirees, or senior citizens and anyone else that may qualify.

The Class of 2016 senior church banquets will start with St. Teresa's Catholic banquet March 28 at 6:30 p.m. So far we have the Methodist banquet April 18 and the Church of Christ banquet April 25. Still checking on the Baptist and Victory Family dates. Stay tuned.

The FHS one-act play public performance will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday March 20. The FHS senior steak dinner is Sunday April 10. I believe the cost is $15 this year. As always details later when we get them. Hard to find anybody this spring break week. My schedule says the Chiefs are competing in the Nazareth baseball tournament this weekend. KNNK 100.5 FM will broadcast the Chieftain baseball district games beginning March 29 at Shallowater.

The Deaf Smith Electric Co-Op annual meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. March 22. The West Texas Rural Telephone Co-Op annual meeting is 6:00 p.m. March 29. Both are at the Bull Barn in Hereford. As usual it has been a fast year but a good year. Thanks for reading the Friona Star. We will be back every week about this same time. Until then!
