This is one of those sad and happy situations. Carol Ellis’ family has moved her to Lubbock. She was beginning to have some of those age issues so they moved her into the Raider Ranch Retirement Village. I will forever be grateful to Bill and Carol Ellis for hiring me here at the Friona Star back in 1995 then selling me the paper in 2003. Bill passed away a few years back, now Carol has moved. I know she will eventually enjoy her new retirement surroundings.

If any of her old friends around here want to send her a card or letter or maybe some candy and cookies, here is her address: Carol Ellis, 6548 43rd St. Apt 2119, Lubbock, TX 79407.

Tuesday is Valentine’s Day. I’ll bet you still have time to order homemade fudge from Sandra Berend. It is a one-pound box with red hearts on it. A plain fudge is $10 and with pecans or walnuts $12. She will deliver on February 13 or earlier. Sandra’s fudge is quite famous around here. She’s on Facebook or you can call her.

Co-Op Gin manager Duncan Welch told us at Lions Club last week that the Friona Farmers Co-Op Gin baled 14,982 bales of cotton this year. Great turnaround since the gin did not operate last year.

Who celebrated their 40th anniversaries last week just in time for Valentine Day? Happy 40th to Susan and Al Kerby of Bovina and Bonnie and Mike Pope of Friona.

Last week the Texas Tech archive library folks brought back all of our past issues of the Friona Star. They have completed loading them online. The Bovina Blade was published from 1955 through 2003. We sent all of our copies of the Blade back to Lubbock to be archived. They said it might take a year to load them all. You can search a name or an event or a date and read it in the online archive. Type www.swcd.ttu.edu then look for the Friona Star.

Next Friday, February 17, is the last day to sign up for the city council and school board election May 6. As of this week two people, Wade Schueler and Jamie Lewellen, have signed up for the two seats on the school board. Schueler is an incumbent and Lewellen is a new candidate. No one has signed up for the three seats on the city council but several have picked up applications.

Had a doctor’s appointment Tuesday at the clinic. It was busy. Nurse Christina said, “the flu has hit.” It was very busy before and after my appointment. Got a couple of prescriptions for my bad cough and chest congestion. Went to the lab for a chest x-ray to make sure I did not have pneumonia. I didn’t thank goodness. Bi-Wize was busy too. I’m grateful for our local clinic, hospital, and pharmacy . Not many small towns the size of Friona have health facilities and healthcare employees to compare with ours.

Congratulations to Kim DeWit and Daniel “Jet” Pena, named basketball king and queen Tuesday night. The Squaws ended their season. The boys play at Idalou Friday then their final game is here Tuesday vs. Shallowater. Game time on that one is 6:30 p.m. Now it is on to baseball, track, golf, and powerlifting as the spring activities descend. Spring break, senior steak dinner, prom, graduation. Wow.

Word talk: came across the word charcuterie last week and looked it up. It is the branch of cooking devoted to prepared meat products like bacon, ham, sausage. Didn’t know that or else I had forgotten. Guess Rick White operates a charcuterie right here in Friona with his White’s Beef Jerky.
