Healthy Harvest for Friona celebration Sept. 16

The 61st Annual Maize Days Celebration will be held September 8-16 and the Friona Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture is busy getting everything ready to present a spectacular party. This year’s theme is “Healthy Harvest for Friona”.

The festivities begin on Friday, September 8 with the crowning of Miss Friona and Little Miss Friona at the pageant held at Friona High School Auditorium starting at 6 p.m.

Miss Friona entry deadline is Friday, August 25 and Little Miss Friona deadline is Thursday, August 31. If anyone is interested in joining this fun and educational event, contact Kathryn Rector or the Chamber office at (806) 250-3491. Entry forms are available online at www.frionachamber.com or stop by the Chamber office at 621 Main in Friona.

Little Miss Friona contestants’ pictures must be submitted at the same time as the entry form. For more information, contact Kathy Rector at (806) 577-6130 or Erika Carrillo at (806) 400-6113.

Gospel music performed by local singers and musicians will be presented by the Friona Christian Ministries at the Gospel Gathering on Wednesday, September 13 at the FHS Auditorium starting at 6:30 p.m. Make plans to attend this inspirational gathering and enjoy the beautiful music. The Friona Chieftains will host the Bovina Mustangs for Homecoming at Chieftain Field on Friday, September 15. The 2017 Homecoming Queen will be crowned before kick-off at 7:30 p.m. Come on out and cheer on the Chieftains to a victory.

Saturday, September 16 will dawn with the Dixon Memorial Run at 7 a.m. at Reeve Lake. The run will consist of a two-mile and six-mile run/walk. Entry fee is $5. Contact Joel Duffield at (308) 641-3034 for more information.

The annual Maize Days parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Main Street followed by a quilt show, petting zoo, food, fun and activities in the City Park.

Businesses, FHS classes, civic organizations, churches, etc. are encouraged to enter floats in the parade. The chamber welcomes anyone that has an antique car, truck or tractor, new car/truck, and/or farm equipment to show your Friona pride and join the parade. The kiddos can also be a part of the parade by riding their bicycles, motorcycles or 4-wheelers. Horses and riders are welcome to join the parade. Contact the Chamber office for more information on being a part of this Friona tradition.

Ribbons will be awarded to the top parade entries.

The Friona Volunteer Fire Department will hold the drawing for a 4-wheeler and trailer at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available from any firefighter.

Beautiful quilts will be displayed at the Depot at the Quilt Show and is sponsored by the Stitching Post Quilters. Enjoy the intricate handiwork and designs of local quilters.

New in the park, this year is a Petting Zoo. Just bring pets to the city park. A pen will be set up and ready at 9-9:30 a.m. If you have a “gentle” animal or pet you would like to show at the petting zoo, contact Sergio Mendez at (806) 265-5344.
