*The Parmer County Commissioners will meet Monday, September 11 at 10 a.m. in Farwell at the County Courthouse. The public is welcome to attend.

*Monday, September 11 will be busy with the Friona City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers. The Friona ISD Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. at the FISD Administration building and Parmer Medical Center Hospital Board will meet that evening as well. All meetings are open to the public.

*Friona Heritage Estates will be hosting a Community Game Day every Tuesday at 2 p.m. If you need a ride call Connie Johnson at (806) 295-6044.

The will also be hosting a monthly Aging and Wellness event with Bluebonnet Home Health. This month the event will be held on Friday, September 15 at 11 a.m. If you would like to stay for lunch remember to RSVP by Thursday, September 14.

*Community Bingo will be held at Prairie Acres on Saturday, September 30 at 3 p.m. The community is invited to come out and enjoy a rousing game of Bingo. Mark your calendar for this fun-filled event.

*Miss Friona and Little Miss Friona will be crowned on Friday, September 8. Come out and enjoy the pageant at the Friona High School Auditorium beginning at 6 p.m.

*Prairie Acres and Friona Heritage Estates wants to wish their residents, clients and staff a “Happy Birthday”. Those celebrating in September are Christine Zorns (Sep. 8), Jo Wells (Sep. 29), Tina Eddins (Sep. 8), Gloria Escobedo (Sep. 9), Bertha Mendoza (Sep. 20), Amber Mondragon (Sep. 23), Marie Saiz (Sep. 24), and Sandra Padilla (Sep. 29).

*The Gospel Gathering is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Friona High School Auditorium. Local singers will be showcased during this event. Admission is free to the public. Come early to get a good seat.

*The Friona Chieftains will host the Bovina Mustangs for Homecoming on Friday, September 15. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned before the game. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

*Grandparents Day is Sunday, September 10. Celebrate your grandparents.

*First Baptist Church of Friona will embark on a Protestant Reformation journey starting Sunday, September 10 at 6 p.m. This is a nine-session journey to be carried out over the next nine weeks.

*FHS Volleyball has a busy schedule that will have them traveling most of the month of September into October. The Varsity Squaws are number 16 on the TGCA State Volleyball Poll this week. Way to go, Squaws!

*If you are interested in having a float or being part of the Maize Days parade, contact the Chamber Office at (806) 250-3491. They also have vendor forms if you are interested in having a booth during the Maize Days festivities.

*Story Time has begun at the Friona Public Library. If you have a child 3-years-old or older contact, the library to get them registered. Every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. children will enjoy a story and fun activity presented by the Library staff.

*If you have not gotten your tickets for the Friona Volunteer Fire Department raffle, you need to hurry. The FVFD will draw a winner at 1 p.m. in the City Park on Saturday, September 16 during the Maize Days festivities. They will have a booth in the park but tickets can be purchased from any firefighter. Tickets are $10.

*Small But Not Forgotten is calling upon all Parmer County residents to donate clothing, baby items, cleaning supplies, etc. for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Items can be dropped off at Vet Industries, Bi-Wize and Parmer County Implement. Donated items will be taken to the Houston area in the next few weeks.

*The Action for an Ambulance fund may have gotten a grant but they still need donations to reach their goal of $220,000. Contact Kitty Gallman for more information or to make a donation.

*Congratulations to Jordan Kelly and Jack Glover for winning first and second place this week in the Friona Football Contest. Both contestants guessed ten games correctly and were only seven points apart on the tiebreaker.

*I owe a huge THANK YOU to Daniel Rosales, Jake Ebeling and Tommy DeLeon for sending me stats for the Varsity, JV and Freshman games played last week. You are awesome!

*Happy Anniversary wishes go out to Mike & Becky Riethmayer and Rex & Chuck Blackburn this week. Mike and Becky have been married for 48 years. Rex and Chuck are celebrating 61 years together.

*Friona Primary School will end this week with GRANDPARENTS’ DAY on Friday, September 8. Grandparents are invited to share lunch with their students at the times listed below. Please note that plates will be $4.00 per adult. All grandparents visiting should sign in at the cafeteria doors located just across the street from our school. Lunch times: - PK 10:35 AM - Kinder 10:55 AM - First 10:45 AM - Daycare 11:00 AM.

*Snack Pak 4 Kids will be packing backpacks every 2nd and 4th Thursday of most months. If you are interested in helping meet at the Friona United Methodist Church at 4:30 p.m. on those days.

*The NRCS will host a Local Working Group meeting next Wednesday, September 13 from 10-11 a.m. at the XIT Activity Center in Bovina. For more information, contact Earl Behrends, district conservationist, at (806) 481-3311 ext. 104.

*The Varsity Chieftains travel to Stinnett this Saturday to meet the Booker Kiowas at 1:30 p.m. Go Big Red!

*FHS Athletic Director Jimmy Arias notified the Star of a few updates to the football schedule. The Freshmen Chieftains will travel to Idalou on September 14 and play at 5 p.m. and the October 19th game has been cancelled with Littlefield.

The 7th grade Braves will travel to Sundown on September 14 and play at 5 p.m.

*The FHS/FJHS Cross-Country teams will be participating in the Plainview Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, September 9.

*Keep the victims of Hurricane Harvey in your prayers. You might include those people that will have to endure Hurricane Irma in the upcoming days.
