Town Talk

Businesswoman and Superwoman, Holly Campbell, took a tumble this past weekend while stepping off a ladder. She suffered a break to one of her arms and a sprain on her other wrist. Knowing Holly most of my life, I know she will have the spirit and drive to power through. Hoping for a speedy recovery, Holly!

Small Business Week is from April 29 through May 5 and is a time to recognize the entrepreneurs and small business owners all across the country. “More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.” Take time during Small Business Week to visit and support your local/favorite small businesses and makers, especially those right here in Friona.

I had a visitor in the office this week. He first asked me if I was the owner of “this place”, motioning around at the office, to which I replied that I was not. He proceeded to explain that he bought his motorcycle at the same dealership where I purchased mine in Bedford, Texas, and that my salesman friend who works there, Scotty, had told him about me, since this man lives in Amarillo. Funny how quickly the tone of the conversation went from “who are you?” to “wow, what a small world!” The Harley Davidson dealership in Bedford is said to be the largest in Texas, so this acquaintance was least expected for me. I really enjoy these types of instances, though, and especially making connections in the moto-realm. Good to meet you, Kevin!

We would like to begin featuring local recipes in our newspaper, ones that our readers find extra special or noteworthy. What are some of your favorite seasonal dishes to make? Do you have a specialty dish that you think others should try? Maybe a family recipe that you don’t mind sharing? Whatever the case may be, we hope you’ll send a few ideas our way. Please email recipes to frionastar@wtrt.net.

We sincerely apologize to Bovina Chamber’s Educator of the Year, Dawn Watson, for not catching our mistake in the newspaper (twice) and identifying her as Dawn Wilson. We try our best to ensure the information in our newspaper is correct, and always take errors such as this as something to learn by. Dawn, if you’re reading this, we are sorry! Thank you for being an excellent leader in the community.

It was a nice little storm we had here last Friday, coming in at a whopping .31 inches on Gurley’s rain gauge. No complaints here, though, I’m sure everyone was just as happy as I was to see some precipitation.

I’d like to extend sincere and unending thanks and appreciation to the firefighters, first responders, and city officials of this community and surrounding areas who work tirelessly to protect and serve day in and day out. Your efforts are recognized, and we are blessed to have such a team. Thank you.

My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the two young men who passed away this past weekend. It is difficult to know what to say in such times, but I hope for peace and strength for those affected. Your community is here for you.
