Head Coach and Athletic Director Mike Prokop talks to the Chieftains at the end of Monday’s practice. The boys and coaches have been working hard to prepare for the 2013 season. Opening game is Friday August 30 vs. Stratford. Game time is 4:30 p.m. at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo. Friona is the home team. Go Big Red.

Squaw volleyball update

The Friona Squaws volleyball team participated in the Shallowater tourney August 16-17. They opened up pool play with three wins in a row over Christ the King, Tulia, and Brownfield. (more...)

Town Talk II

School has begun and so has the SnackPak4Kids program furnishing weekend food for needy children. The children are selected by teachers and names are kept private. A volunteer sign-up for the SnackPak4Kids 2013-2014 school year will be held Thursday, September 5, from 5-6 p.m. at the Senior Citizens building, 1410 Washington. Donations of 16 oz peanut butter and Pop Tarts are always accepted. Money donations are also accepted to help with this important program. For more info ask Becky Jones or Jo Beth Gipson. A Curry County inmate named Shuntae Byrd, 35, was housed in our Parmer County jail. Curry County (Clovis) pays our jail to house many of their prisoners. Shuntae Byrd got mad because, according to Sheriff Geries, he didn’t get his evening Tylenol on time so he knocked a sprinkler head off flooding part of the jail. (more...)

Football contest starts next week

The annual Friona Star football contest will begin in the Thursday September 5 issue. The contest will run for 12 weeks with a $25 cash prize to the weekly winner and a $100 grand prize to the overall point winner. In case of a tie at the end of the 12 weeks the grand prize will be divided.(more...)

Johnston hired as county auditor

Parmer County Commissioners met Monday August 26 at the courthouse in Farwell.

They approved an interlocal agreement for the 911 service now being provided out of the Sheriff’s Office. Effective September 1, 2013 people called to jury duty will be paid $40 per day after the first day if they are selected for a jury. (more...)
