The local police department has taken a firm policy toward folks driving without a driver license. If you or your kids are driving around with no license and get stopped, the police will call Municipal Judge Deborah Campbell and haul you to court immediately to arrange to pay the fines and you run the risk of the vehicle being impounded. Not a good idea to drive in Friona without a driver license. There were 12 such arrests in April.

Esdras Rodriguez, FHS Class of 2014, was selected for the Texas High School Powerlifting Association all-state academic elite team. A 3.85 grade point average is required and only two from this region made the team according to Coach Daniel Hutchins. Esdras will be the Class of 2014 valedictorian. Salutatorian is Ricardo Soto and historian is Jacob Osborn. There is an all male top three this year, following an all girl top three in the Class of 2013. Watch for our special graduation section next week.

They are having a Spring Bling arts and crafts show Saturday May 17 at the Bailey County Coliseum in Muleshoe with 40 vendors. Admission is free.

Mandy Geries Rigler was honored as Nurse of the Year for her unit at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock.

Last week I mentioned a Friona connection at Dandy Drugs in the unincorporated town of Rendon near Burleson. Dave Buske sent an email that his niece Trisha, Denise Teel’s daughter, operates a veterinary clinic in Rendon also. My sister Gena Rogers lives in Rendon.

Baby alert: Last week Trisha Winebrenner Steelman had a baby boy and Briana Wright Anderson had a baby girl. Congratulations to the parents and grandparents.

We received subscription renewals from former residents Tom Jarboe and Bill Hardin, both of whom are now Amarillo residents. Thanks for keeping in touch guys.

The FHS Senior Academic Awards will be presented Sunday May 18 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. This is the assembly to announce scholarships and the Class of 2014 top 10 grads. Former FHS students Dr. Lisa Edelmon Veggeberg and Mike Ortiz will be honored as FHS Distinguished Graduates. Principal Dr. Pam Ray says a surprise induction will be announced into the school’s Hall of Honor. Esdras Rodriguez is the class valedictorian, Ricardo Soto is salutatorian, and Jacob Osborn is the historian.

Update on the Brumley family from Hereford, injured in a vehicle accident in Arkansas December 31, 2013.. Caleb Brumley has now transferred to a rehab facility in Irving, Texas. After extensive rehab in Irving, Caleb’s next stop will be home to Hereford.

Busy week for the Noon Lions. Cooked burgers and fries for Saturday’s Campus vs. Cops basketball game. Cooked fries for the all-sports banquet Tuesday evening. Holding the annual Mop & Broom Sale Thursday May 15 at the city park. Put out flags around town for Armed Forces Day Saturday May 17. The club thanks everyone in the community for their support.
