Cargill Sweet Bran wins 1st place at Cheeseburger Festival

The 10th Annual Texas Cheeseburger Festival and Cook-off is now in the history books and those attending enjoyed the delicious cheeseburger offerings by the twelve teams that were competing for the top honor.

Cargill Sweet Bran in Bovina came back vigorously after their second place showing at the 2014 Cheeseburger Festival and Cook-off to take top honors at this year’s festival. They were rewarded for their efforts with the $1,000 first place check and trophy. Upon receiving the check, they announced that they would be matching the $1,000 and donating it to the Bovina Volunteer Fire Department.

Chuck Wagon Grill Burger Builders also stepped up their game from being the People’s Choice last year to earn second place and bragging rights. Second place paid $300.

First National Bank-Friona Banking Center's cheeseburger was named the People’s Choice.

The Cheeseburger Eating Contest drew eight participants with big appetites from around the area. Scott Bradley of Amarillo took first place by downing four and a half burgers in just five minutes. He beat his closest opponent by two very large bites.

With thirty-two vendors there was not much you could not find at the City Park. Vendors sold everything from Avon to jewelry to wall hangings. Providing free watermelon and free water were Friona InterBank and W.T. Services. The Farwell High School cheerleaders sold homemade ice cream while the Friona Noon Lions doled out their world-famous French fries.

The Minute Men Car and Bike Show was held during the festival and results are on page 2 of this issue.

If you missed this year’s festival come on out for the 11th Annual Texas Cheeseburger Festival and Cook-off on July 17, 2016 and enjoy the hometown feeling of fun and good food that only a small town can provide.
