Town Talk II

by Ron Carr

Great weather all week. Temperatures in the 70s and touched 80 one day. It is still February too and don't forget February has 29 days in this leap year. Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday March 13 when we spring forward an hour.

It is time to vote. Early voting is underway daily at the courthouse in Farwell. Early voting in Friona at Interbank is today, Thursday February 18, and Thursday February 25. In this Star we have provided sample ballots and a list of where to vote March 1 in the primary election.

Friona folks who have been customers of Evans Jewelers in Clovis, Mr. Terry Evans has died. Terry was confined to a wheelchair but greeted customers and worked on jewelry, watches, etc. He was a very congenial guy. We had several conversations about politics and the world in general. Our thoughts and sympathies to his wife Judy and the family.

A tragic accident Saturday afternoon in the 600 block of W. 9th Street claimed the life of Samuel Ruiz, 36. Mr. Ruiz was working under a car when it fell on him. The incident happened about 2:00 p.m. The Friona Volunteer Firemen were dispatched and used their airbags to lift the vehicle so Mr. Ruiz could be removed. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Pam Haseloff from Farwell. Arrangements are being handled by Blackwell-Mullins Funeral Home to send Mr. Ruiz's body back to Guatemala.

Congratulations to my Bovina friends Jessie and Alice Stone who celebrated their 47th anniversary last week. Hope you have many more.

Last week in Town Talk we reported Five Star Bistro has moved to the former Hub Café location. Apparently we printed a wrong telephone number. The correct phone number is 265-3219.

The sign-up period for local elections ends Friday February 19. At our press deadline incumbents Becky Riethmayer and Ricky Barnett have signed up for re-election to the school board. Likewise for the city council, incumbents Martha Barker, Greg Lewellen, and Mayor Rick White have signed up for re-election. If there are no further sign-ups the May 7 local election will be canceled.

The Kids Inc. T-ball and baseball forms will be available by the end of February. They will be sent home with kids in Pre-K through 6th grade. We will print the form in a future issue of the Star. Also Jamie Lewellen reports that the scoreboard has been purchased and will be installed before the season starts. Batter up, it's baseball time.

On Sunday March 6, you can go have a great Mexican dinner at St. Teresa's Catholic Church, enchiladas and tacos embellished by the church ladies' famous salsa. Then, at 2:00 p.m. the FFA's second annual donkey basketball game will be at the high school gym. The Chamber banquet is Tuesday March 8. Tickets are $25 each in advance only. We will see you here, there or somewhere. Until then!
