Congratulations go out to Mark and Lisa Neill on celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary on March 26 and Ricky and Erin Barnett are celebrating 22 years of wedded bliss.

Richard Samarron has been busy lately. He cleaned up the Library Garden and did a great job. The Friends of the Library invite everyone to notice the nice job Richard did with the garden behind the library. Apparently, it was a mess until he and his helper took away all the dead foliage that winter left behind. Thank you Richard!

The 1st Annual Pre-K Transportation Parade will be held Friday, March 31 at 1 p.m. in the gated area in front of the Primary Building. Students and their families have used their creativity to create their own version of transportation.

Friona Junior High will hold their Spring Open House this coming Tuesday, April 4 from 5-5:45 p.m. This is a good time to talk to your child’s teachers.

That was a pretty awful wind that blew through Friona last Thursday. It stirred up everything from dirt to tumbleweeds. The winds were so bad that a cattle truck leased to Bunker Trucking was blown over on its side late Thursday evening. The truck was not loaded down with cattle. Thankfully there were no injuries to the driver or any cattle. Thanks to the Parmer County Sheriff’s Office for sharing photos and information.

The Friona Independent School District will be electing two Board of Trustee members on May 6.

Early voting is April 24-28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and May 1-2 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the FISD Administration Building, 909 E. 11th.

On May 6, the election will be held at the Friona Chamber of Commerce at 619 Main Street.

Those running are Corbin Riethmayer, Maria Monreal Garcia, Wade Schueler and Jamie Lewellen.

Make plans to meet the candidates at a forum hosted by the FHS Government/Economics class on Sunday, April 9 at 3 p.m. at the FHS Auditorium. This hour-long forum will be followed by refreshment and visiting with the candidates.

This weekend is shaping up to be a busy one filled with fun and food. The 3rd Annual Hi-Pro Feeds the Future will be held at the Country Rose on Saturday at 6 p.m. Come on out and support this fundraiser for Snack Pak 4 Kids and enjoy a delightful evening.

On Sunday, the 2017 Senior Class will host their annual steak dinner at the Friona Junior High cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The money raised from this benefit the 2017 Senior Class alcohol/drug free all-night graduation celebration.

The 2017 Senior Banquet season kicks off on Monday, April 3 with the St.Teresa’s celebration of the Seniors. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Caregivers Coffee Break will be Friday, April 7 at 9:30 a.m. at the First National Bank Community Room. If you are a caregiver or know a caregiver, stop by and enjoy a donut with other caregivers in the community.

Easter is almost here. First Baptist Church will be presenting the musical “Amazing Love-How Can It Be” on Palm Sunday, April 9 at 10:40 a.m. during the morning worship service.

Fedora Theatrix Home School Drama group will present “And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the world of Anne Frank” by James Still at the XIT Recreation Center in Bovina on Friday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. and an encore on Saturday, April 8 at 3 p.m. Admission is free but donations will be accepted.

It is spring and time to clean up after a long winter.

The Friona Cemetery Association will meet April 12 to elect board members. Then they will hold their annual cleanup workday on Thursday, May 18 at 5 p.m. at the Friona Cemetery.

The Parmer County Memorial Cemetery Park met last week and elected officers. They will hold their cleanup day on Saturday, April 22 at 9 a.m.

The FHS All-Sports Banquet will be Tuesday, May 9. All senior athletes need turn in their favorite photo from one of the sports they were involved in. You need to get them to Jamie Rejino.

A post on Facebook advised that there will be a Chieftain/Squaw Booster Club meeting on Monday, April 17 at 6 p.m. at Friona InterBank to discuss decorations and other ideas.

I saw where the Humane Society of Deaf Smith County will hold a grand opening for their Second Chance Animal Shelter. There will be tours of the facility on Saturday, April 1 from 12-3 p.m. with door prizes, hot dogs and a big raffle. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Hereford Farm Bureau office. Could be a good time to find a forever pet.

In other news from around the area, the 20th Anniversary Ogallala Quilt Festival will be held Friday, March 31 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Dimmitt High School Activity Center. Admission is $5.

They will have over 200 quilts on display, classes, and vendors. There will be at least seven quilts shown by Friona quilters.

I have been to this event in the past and there are some beautiful quilts featuring some of the most beautiful artwork to be found. These quilters are very talented and for $5 you get to walk among these masterpieces.
