If you are looking for a reason not to cook lunch on Saturday, June 3, come by Milk House Market for the Friona Squaw Basketball Team Brisket Sandwich Fundraiser. It begins at 11 a.m. For $10, you get a brisket sandwich, chips, drink and a cookie. All the proceeds go to the Squaws basketball team.

Daniel Jet Pena and Chris Rodriguez have been selected to play in the GWTBCA (Greater West Texas Baseball Coaches Association) All-Star Game on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Hays Field on the campus of Lubbock Christian University. Way to go Daniel and Chris!

Richard and Monica Bermea will be celebrating 25 years of marriage on June 6. Congratulations and Happy Anniversary Richard and Monica!

We found out last week that Jackie Hefner had a heart attack and was in the hospital in Amarillo. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Hollis Horton reported that Jodey Arrington was in Friona last Friday visiting with a group of local farmers and business owners at Headquarters Restaurant. He discussed the first 120 days of this year’s Congress. He discussed the agriculture farm programs, taxes, deficits and illegal immigration. He was appointed to the Farm, Veterans and Budget committees. These are important assignments for a Freshman Congressman.

The Friona Swimming Pool is open for the summer. Kendall and Kim Kimbrough are the managers. The pool is open Monday through Saturday from 1-5 p.m. for public swimming. Water aerobics classes will be held from 6-7 p.m. each day for $2.

If you haven’t signed up for the 9th Annual Pudge Kendrick Memorial Golf Tournament, you need to soon. Space is limited to 80 teams. The tournament will be July 29-30 at John Pitman Golf Club in Hereford. It is a two-person scramble. The entry fee is $250 per team. The proceeds from the tournament benefit the Parmer County Cancer Coalition and the Hereford Cancer Coalition. For more information, contact the John Pitman Golf Club at (806) 363-7139.

The Friona Police Department posted on Facebook that they have received a number of vehicle burglaries and stolen vehicles reports.

Please help the FPD by reporting any suspicious activity around your home and lock your vehicles. If you have information about any vehicle burglaries or stolen vehicles, call the FPD at (806) 250-2711 or call Parmer County Crime Stoppers at (806) 481-9178. You may remain anonymous.

Plans are in the works for the Parmer County Sheriff’s Office National Night Out, which will be held Tuesday, October 3 from 6-8 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center in Farwell. Contact Tanya Hunn at the Sheriff’s Office (806) 481-3303 to be a part of this community-binding event.

The Allsup’s West makeover continued this week. Workers were spotted removing the old awning over the gas pumps and tearing up concrete in the parking lot. It looks like it will be a completely new place when the work is all done but until then be careful entering and exiting the parking lot.

The Friona Blood Council met Tuesday, May 30 at Hunan Restaurant to discuss the upcoming Blood Drive on June 22. There were 63 donors at the Blood Drive April 13. This number exceeded the previous blood drive numbers. At the June Blood Drive Dairy Max will be on hand with pints of milk, cups of ice cream and squeeze cows for every donor. The Friona Noon Lions will be cooking up cheeseburgers for all the donors. According to Jon Solis, Coffee Memorial Blood Center Account Consultant, there will be a radio remote crew on hand for the drive. Come on out to the Calvary Baptist Church on June 22 from noon to 7 p.m. and enjoy a delicious cheeseburger and give the gift of life.

Summer Reading at the Friona Public Library begins this week. There is a calendar of events on page 3 for the upcoming programs at the Friona Junior High Auditorium. Check it out! You could win special prizes just for reading and/or writing. Door prizes will be given away at each program. Support you local Library programs.

Ron’s chemo and radiation are going well. His two youngest children, Megan and Zac, are now residents of Friona. They will be taking care of their father and taking him to his treatments. Thank you to everyone that has driven Ron to Amarillo, brought by food, and come by for a visit in the past few months. He really appreciates your generosity.

The AgriLife Extension Office reminds all 4-H kids that if they want to be part of the District Pistol contest they need to register by Friday, June 2. The contest is June 13 at South Plains College in Levelland.

The H2O Camp is coming up on Wednesday, June 14. This event is sponsored by the 4-H Association. The cost is $20 and you can RSVP to your club leader or the Extension office. The deadline is Monday, June 12. For more information, contact the local agents at (806) 251-5120.
