Mary Alice Merrell

Mary Alice Merrell, 87, longtime Bovina resident, died Tuesday, June 6, 2017 in Friona. Graveside Inurnment services were held Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Bovina Cemetery in Bovina, Texas with Rev. Brian Mullins, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bovina, officiating. Arrangements by Blackwell-Mullins Funeral Home in Friona.

Mary was born April 11, 1930 in Bovina to Ezra Homer and Alma Alice Bond Englant. She taught 1st grade in the Friona Independent School District for many years, was a master at leather work, sold Avon and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bovina.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Daryl Merrell; one brother, Floyd Englant; and one sister, Barbara Kesler.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Barham of Lubbock, and Connie Goad of Amarillo; three sons, Dale Merrell of Bovina, Doyle Merrell of Baytown and David Merrell and wife Kay of Amarillo; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Prairie Acres Nursing Home, 201 East 15th, Friona, Texas 79035.

Joaquin Rueda

Joaquin Rueda, 67, of Friona, died Wednesday, June 7, 2017 in Friona. Mass of Christian burial services were held Friday, June 9, 2017 at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Friona with Rev. Anthony Swamy Aakula, as celebrant. Burial followed in the Friona Cemetery by Blackwell-Mullins Funeral Home in Friona.

Joaquin was born August 16, 1949 in Mexico to Eduardo and Maria Rueda.

He was a machine operator for a construction company in Austin and loved his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include: his wife, Jovita Rueda; three sons, Carlos Rueda, Alejo Rueda and Jose Rueda, all of Friona; three daughters, Paula Garcia and Maria Rueda both of Friona and Ines Rueda of Mexico; one sister from Oklahoma; one sister from Missouri; two sisters from Mexico; and 13 grandchildren.

Betty Jane Barnett Douglas

Betty Jane Barnett Douglas, who was born on October 11, 1942 in Friona, Texas to Fern William and Francis Mildred Barnett, passed away June 12, 2017 in McKinney, Texas. Betty’s mission in life was to raise strong and loving children. Mission accomplished. She not only accomplished that mission but was a central figure in a large, loving, supportive family.

Betty is survived by her brother James Wesley Barnett and his wife Doris of Friona, Texas and her sister Judy Ann Davis and her husband Mike of Irving, Texas, and an expansive but closely knit family.

Betty was a loving mother to her three children, Jay Kirk Douglas (Lexington, Kentucky), Jan Douglas Holmes (McKinney, Texas) and Jon Mark Douglas (Friona, Texas) and a supportive, fun grandmother and step-grandmother to her nine grandchildren, Justin Douglas (Marine Corps, Camp Pendleton, California) and Ashley Hunt Robinson (Lubbock, Texas) [children of Jay and Kelley Douglas], Breanna Flake (Dallas, Texas), Bailee Flake (Baylor University), Brandon Holmes (New York City) and Maia Holmes (Denver, Colorado) [children of Jan and Ron Holmes], and Gavin Douglas (US Army, Ft. Hood, Texas), Brandon Douglas and Gabbi Douglas (Friona, Texas) [children of Jon and Rachel Douglas], and great grandmother to Taygan Turner (Lubbock, Texas) [daughter of Ashley Robinson]. She was also an adoring Aunt to seven nephews and nieces and their 15 children: Brian Davis and his wife Reagan and their two children (Flower Mound, Texas); Phillip Davis (Irving, Texas); Dr. Chris Barnett and wife Renee and their two children (San Angelo, Texas); Dr. Kyle Barnett and his wife Mellissa and their three children (Salt Lake City, Utah); Kim Barnett Marx and her husband Scott (PA) and their three children (Aubrey, Texas); Rick Barnett and his wife Erin and their two children; and David Barnett and his wife Heather and their three children (Little Rock, Arkansas).

Betty is now rejoicing in Heaven, free of the walker, wheelchair and discomfort she suffered the last year of her life.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 18, 2017, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Hereford Heritage Funeral Home, 411 E. 6th Street, Hereford, Texas 79045. A Memorial service will be held Monday, June 19, 2017, 10:00 a.m. at Hereford Heritage Funeral Home, followed by a grave site ceremony.

Charlie Ray Brady

Charlie Ray Brady, 89, of Friona, died Wednesday, June 7, 2017 in Friona. Graveside services were held Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Friona Cemetery with Rev. Randy Johnson of Canyon, officiating. Burial followed by Blackwell-Mullins Funeral Home of Friona.

Charlie was born May 23, 1928 in Thornton, Texas to Jimmy and Nellie Darnell Brady. He married Onnie May Clark December 24, 1956 in Clovis.

He was an area farmer, loved to play dominoes, pool, talk and garden.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Anthony Ray Brady; two brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include one son, Curtis Brady and wife Elizabeth of Lubbock; two brothers, James Brady and wife Effie of Dalhart and Sam Brady and wife Shirley of Mineral Wells; one sister, Nellie Kate Jackson of Friona; and three grandchildren.

Harold Stanberry

Harold Stanberry, 70, of Bovina, died June 12, 2017 in Melrose, N.M. Graveside services were held Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Bovina Cemetery with Rev. Sherman Martin, pastor the House First Baptist Church of House, N.M., officiating. Burial followed in the Bovina Cemetery by Blackwell-Mullins Funeral Home of Friona.

Harold was born February 7, 1947 in Danville, Arkansas to Thogal Denton and Bonnie Mae McCormick Stanberry. He was a longtime area farmer, chemical mixer for an area crop spraying service, loved to tinker with anything mechanical and play pool.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Buford Stanberry and Cloys Wayne Stanberry.

Survivors include two daughters, Tina Dial and husband Lance of Melrose, and Twyla Smith and husband Byron of Jacksonville, Arkansas; two brothers, Danny Stanberry of Clarksville, Texas and Loy Dean Stanberry of Bovina; one sister, Brenda McNeely and husband Reggie of Axle, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
