The 4x400m relay team of Anay Chihuahua, Jodie Denton, Emma Rector, and Bailey Pope qualified for the State track meet on May 10-11 in Austin by placing 2nd with a time of 4:03.53 at the Regional meet last week in Abilene.

Send-off for Squaws Relay Team is May 9th

There will be a send-off for the Friona Squaws 4x400m Relay team as they head to Austin to compete Friday night around 10:30 p.m. in the State Track & Field Championships. The send-off will start at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 9th at the High School with a procession around the hallways. The escort will then start from the High School and go north to Highway 60 and then will go east and then make a right turn on Euclid Street. South on Euclid will take the team past well-wishers from the Junior High, Primary, and Elementary schools. The procession will turn left on 9th and go back to Main Street, south on Main, then turn right on 5th street and travel west to Grand and then turn left on Highway 214 going south towards Muleshoe. Make sure to get out and cheer on the Squaws as they head to Austin!!!

Attention parents of graduating seniors! We have handed out forms for the high school seniors to fill out for our special graduation edition of the newspaper coming up very quickly. We’ve set the deadline for these forms to be turned in to the high school office no later than May 10, so be sure to get yours in so that everyone may be included! Commissioners extend burn ban

Commissioners voted to extend the county burn ban for ninety days. The area has received some nice rain, but they felt it was not widespread enough to warrant a lifting of the ban. The Commissioners also wanted to remind everyone that they can still call the Sheriff’s Office at 806-481-3303 and schedule a burn when the wind is below 10 mph. (more...)

Take Five: A Friona Star Interview with Adriana Ortiz Carrillo

You are involved in so many activities, how do you manage your time in order to get so much accomplished?

Being in high school and being involved in so many extracurricular activities or community projects actually it is not an easy task. I have a planner and reminders on my phone that are constantly being updated and changed because plans are generally always being changed. I make it a point to always show up to an event or make time for said event when I’ve promised to be there because I don’t like to let people down. I like to help, I always have. (more...)
