Squaw volleyball update

Last weekend the JV and varsity Squaws played in the Denver City tournament.

The JV earned second in their pool by beating Lubbock Estacado and losing to Seminole. The varsity won their pool play with victories over Lamesa and Southwest Christian.

On Saturday the JV squared off with host Denver City. The Squaws came close in game two and actually had a good lead but Denver City came back for the win. The JVs then beat Midland Classical. The JV ladies finished the tourney with a loss to Snyder.

In bracket play the varsity started off slow but were able to pull out a victory over Midland Classical. Next the ladies played host Denver City. They fought hard and had a chance to force a game three but could not pull it off. They played Brownfield for third place but lost to the Lady Cubs.

Tuesday night the Squaws had their second home match of the season, hosting Melrose, NM. The JV started off with a 25-23, 25-18 win.

The varsity lost the first two games by identical scores of 21-25. In game three the Squaws played really well and beat Melrose soundly 25-11. In the fourth game the ladies started off fast with the momentum from the previous game but had to hold on for a 26-24 win. In game five the Lady Buffs took a 6-3 lead but the Squaws fought back, were the first team to 10, then won the match 15-8.

It was a great come from behind victory for the Squaws but it was not all good. The Squaws suffered key injuries to two players. Kim DeWit sprained her ankle and will miss some matches. Arianna Moreno suffered a knee injury and will be checked out this weekend.

The Squaws are 15-9 and travel to Olton for a varsity only match at 12:00 p.m. Saturday. Lubbock Estacado will visit Tuesday September 9. The C team and JV play at 5:00 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30 p.m. Come out, enjoy some volleyball, and support the Squaws.
