Chieftains thump Floydada 27-14

The Chieftains got off to a fast start for the homecoming crowd Friday night with three Chiefs gaining over 100 yards in the game.

Leading rusher was sophomore quarterback Marco Monreal with 112 yards on 15 carries. Sergio Flores picked up 110 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns. Teammate Julius Orozco also had two touchdowns on five carries and 65 yards.

The Chiefs offense had 455 yards in 68 offensive plays and 23 first downs. Monreal completed 8 passes in 14 attempts for 61 yards. Jonathan Hernandez had three catches for 16 yards, Johnny Ojeda also caught three for 18 yards, and Chris Rodriguez had one catch for 26 yards. Hernandez punted six times for 211 yards, a 35.16 average.

The Chieftains are 2-2 and will welcome Dalhart to Chieftain Field Friday September 23. The following week is an open date. District begins with River Road here October 7. That is the Pink Out game. Littlefield comes October 14. The band will have their laptop drawing at halftime.

We are at Muleshoe October 21, Shallowater comes here October 28, and the final regular season game is at Slaton November 4.

Luis Trejo (34) escapes a couple of Floydada tacklers and picks up yardage. Trejo rushed 12 times for 102 yards in the game. The Chieftains will host Dalhart Friday September 23 and have an open date Friday September 30 before district begins November 7 vs. River Road here.
