Happy Anniversary to Juan & Alma Rivera and Raul & Terry Braillif. They all celebrated anniversaries on Monday, May 8. The Rivera’s are celebrating 18 years and the Braillif’s are celebrating 35 years. Congratulations!

First Baptist Church Pastor Brett Hoyle announced that the Children’s Choir is searching for a hidden treasure and would like to share that treasure with you. On Sunday, May 21 at 6 p.m., they will be presenting “Treasure Island”, a musical that teaches about a treasure that is greater than gold. Everyone is invited to attend this exciting event.

The wildlife seems to be invading Friona lately. We received a call from Linda White on Monday that she had found an abandoned baby hawk at the Redeemer Center. She called the police department and they came out to help rescue the poor thing.

On Tuesday, there were deer on the Junior High practice field. They were eventually herded to a safer location.

Youth Fishing Day is coming to Friona Sunday, May 21 from 1-4 p.m. Area youth are invited to come out and enjoy a day of fishing. There is no pre-registration required. Just show up with your fishing gear or borrow gear from the Texas Junior Anglers representatives. Bait will be provided as well. Prizes will be awarded for first and second longest fish in these three age groups: 6 and under, 7 to 11, and 12-16. They will also hold random drawing through the event.

The City of Friona will honor the Friona Volunteer Fire Department on Thursday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Citizen House. We are very lucky to have a fire department and these volunteers deserve to be honored for all they give to the community.

The FHS Junior/Senior Prom is this Saturday at the Hereford Country Club. Expect to see some beautiful dresses, handsome suits and interesting modes of transportation.

The FHS Choir Follies will be held Tuesday, May 16 in the Junior High School Auditorium followed by dessert in the junior high cafeteria.They added something new this year…a silent auction. Come out to hear the beautiful music, which starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.

The FFA Banquet will be at the Friona High cafeteria on Tuesday, May 16 starting at 7 p.m. They will be honoring the accomplishments of the young men and women who represent the Friona FFA.

The Friona Cemetery Association will be out in full force on Thursday, May 18 at 5 p.m. They will be cleaning up the cemetery for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. Come out and help them. Everyone in the community is invited. They will have refreshments available.

Bluebonnet Home Health will be conducting an “Aging and Wellness” workshop at Friona Heritage Estate on Friday, May 19 starting at 11 a.m. If you would like to stay for lunch after the workshop, please RSVP by May 18. To RSVP call Heritage Estates at 250-5599.

For all you Marilyn Monroe fans, they announced last week that the movie star’s home is up for sale. She paid $75,000 in the 1960’s. It was fully furnished and her mortgage payments were only $320 a month. If you would like to own a piece of Hollywood history, it can be purchased for a measly $6.6 million.

This weekend is Mother’s Day. The holiday was created in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as a day to honor the nation’s mothers. Mom’s come in every shape, size, and color. Love for you mom can come in a card, bouquet of flowers or just a big hug and “I love you!” Celebrate your mom’s this weekend.

The FHS Senior Class will be at the Elementary School on Wednesday, May 17. They will be dressed in their graduation gowns and shaking hands with all the students. The seniors are an inspiration to the young students.

Parmer Medical Center will have their monthly free pre-natal classes on Saturday, May 13 from 9-10 a.m. at the hospital.

If you have an athlete, mark your calendar for athletic physicals on Saturday, May 20 beginning at 8 a.m. at the FHS gym. Cost per child is $15.

Ron sends his thanks for the thoughts, prayers and kindnesses that everyone is sending him. He also thanks everyone that is taking turns driving him to Amarillo for his chemo and radiation. He began his third week of treatment this week.

The end of the school year is winding down and summer is just around the corner. Graduation is just 15 days away. The time goes by so fast.

The 9th Annual Pudge Kendrick Memorial Golf Tournament will be held July 29-30 at the John Pitman Golf Club in Hereford. This is a two-person scramble and the entry fee is $250 per team.
