Got news that Clayton Smiley was involved in a one-car rollover Friday evening. He was airlifted to Northwest Texas Hospital with a head laceration, broken ribs and a broken back. He underwent surgery on Sunday morning to insert rods and screws in his back. He is now out of ICU and in lots of pain. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Clayton and his family. We hope you have a speedy recovery.

The Chamber reports that they have 10 confirmed teams for the Cheeseburger Festival on Saturday, July 15. If you are shying away from signing up because of the heat, the Chamber will be giving out cooling bands to each member of every team. They are headbands that are soaked in cold water and worn during outdoor activities. There is room for 10 more teams. Come on out and share your favorite cheeseburger recipe for a big prize.

The Friona Public Library has been super busy lately putting on another terrific summer of entertainment for the Summer Reading program. Last week we heard from a Mike Schneider of Pint Size Polka. He was a really great entertainer and kept the audience engaged throughout his program. I enjoyed the Chicken Dance the most.

This week we got a double dose of the Summer Reading Program. The Lazbuddie Robotics Team proved very entertaining on Wednesday and the local 4-H kids will be on hand on Friday. The programs were held at the Friona Junior High Auditorium. Thank goodness for air conditioning.

I got a personal tour of the new Friona Police Department this week. I knew the building was bigger but I just didn’t realize how big it was compared to the old police station. The officers and dispatchers have more space to work with and are more secure. They are still working out a few bugs but they are up and ready to protect the community.

The Miss Friona steering committee held another in a series of workshops on Tuesday evening. Kathryn Rector and Becky Riethmayer worked with the girls on the subject of colors and full makeup.

According to Facebook, there are only 27 Fridays left until Christmas. Guess I need to hurry up and get those gifts bought.

The Driver’s License office will be moving to the new Friona Police Department office some time next week. For now they are still at the old location.

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” ~John Lubbock
