Town Talk

I made my first appointment with Gems Salon and got my haircut last week by Esmeralda. I must say, I had a great experience. I love my hair (which doesn’t happen often), the atmosphere was nice with friendly conversation, the price was very reasonable, and I was supporting local business by going there! I know that these women will continue to grow and improve, and I look forward to my future appointments with them.

Standardized testing season is among us. This can be a stressful time for some kids, parents, and teachers, but a few things can be done to reduce that stress. Try minimizing the amount of sugar, processed and refined foods you consume—wholesome food will keep you feeling good and increase mental focus. Getting the right amount of sleep is also very important. Your body is restored and recharged the most during sleep, so be mindful of how much you are getting. Exercise will also benefit your mental health, whether it’s a session at the gym or a walk around the block. Last piece of advice I can give is to counter stressful situations with calming reactions. “You can’t always control what goes on outside, but you can control what goes on inside.”

The Pope Boys BBQ food truck is a wonderful new addition to the Friona food scene. They have opened up on a couple of different occasions so far and have seemed to be doing very well. This Saturday, February 17, they will be set up in the parking lot next to Veterinary Industries and will begin serving at 11:00 a.m. I have not tried the food yet myself, but I hope to change that very soon; I hear the brisket is the most popular item on the menu.

Monday is Presidents’ Day, still known to the federal government as “George Washington’s Birthday”. Traditionally celebrated on what is thought to be his actual date of birth, February 22, the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of the 1971 Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. So enjoy it with your family, friends, or by doing something for yourself! You deserve it.
